Description

Incitatus Staunton 114mm Chess Pieces

The knight is named after a horse that a Roman emperor is said to have loved beyond all reason. The stories about the attention Caligula lavished on Incitatus have outlived almost everything else about the reign.

Whoever drew this knight took the story seriously. It is carved with a raised neck and real motion in it, where the usual Staunton horse stands placid.

Around it stands a big, serious army with a 114mm king, well past ordinary club sizing and into the territory where a set becomes furniture.

It is triple weighted, which at this scale means heavy pieces that plant themselves and stay planted through a long game.

You will find it among our luxury chess pieces.

Incitatus Staunton chessmen in bud rosewood and boxwood ready for play

Key features

  • A knight modelled on Incitatus, the horse the emperor Caligula kept and lavished attention on
  • A 114mm king at display scale, well above ordinary club sizing
  • Triple weighted throughout, so every piece plants itself and stays where it is put
  • A back rank that steps down in clear, deliberate stages without bunching
  • Two timber options, bud rosewood or ebony, both against boxwood light pieces
  • Identical carving, weight and dimensions in both timber options
  • Heavy in the hand, the way a set this size should feel
  • 34 pieces, including two extra queens so a promotion never needs an upturned rook

About the pieces

Buy this one for the knight and stay for the weight.

The knight is where the design puts its energy. The neck rises, the head turns, and there is a sense of movement that a placid Staunton horse never carries, which makes it the piece everyone reaches for first.

The rest of the army is drawn to match in scale, not in drama. The ranks step down in clear stages, so the back rank reads cleanly even at a distance and nothing bunches together.

The triple weighting is what turns all of that into a playing set. A large army that feels light is a real disappointment, and this one has the mass to match its height.

These pieces suit larger boards, with squares of 55mm to 65mm, and the set is drawn for the top of that range. A 55mm board will take it but will look packed from move one, so check the figure before ordering.

Ebony and boxwood Incitatus chessmen standing 114mm at the king

Choosing between the two timbers

The carving, the weighting and every dimension are identical on both, and the light army is boxwood either way. Only the dark side changes.

Bud rosewood is a warm reddish brown with visible figure running through it. It softens a large army considerably, and it sits comfortably in a room that already has timber furniture in it.

Ebony is a flat near black with almost no grain to speak of, and it gives the hardest contrast against the boxwood. On a set this size that reads dramatically from across a room.

If the knight is why you are buying it, ebony shows the carving off best, because there is no figure competing with the shapes. If you want the set to feel warm and not formal, take bud rosewood.

Whichever you choose, the set weighs the same, plays the same and needs the same board. The timber decides the mood and nothing else.

Anyone who already owns a standard club board should check the square figure before ordering, because this set wants the top of its range.

Care is simple. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters and air vents, dust it with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, furniture polish and solvent based cleaners alone.

Our expert take

The knight is the case for this one. It is very well cut, and at this scale the work is visible from across the room.

The triple weighting is the other half of the case. Large sets are often disappointing to actually play with because the mass has not kept pace with the height; this one has, and it feels serious the moment you pick a piece up.

It is big and it is heavy, so it needs a proper board and a table it can live on permanently. If you want something at a scale you can pack away, look through our tournament chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Do the two timber options differ in size or weight?

No. The carving, every dimension and the total weight are identical across both, so the timber is the only thing you are choosing between.

What square size do these pieces need?

55mm to 65mm squares, and the set is drawn for the top of that range. A 55mm board takes it but looks packed from move one, so check the figure before ordering.

What does triple weighted mean here?

Extra weight is set into each piece, so they feel dense to lift and sit down firmly on the board. The complete 34 pieces come to 1,921 grams.

Why is the knight called Incitatus?

Incitatus was the horse the Roman emperor Caligula kept and famously indulged. The knight is modelled on that story, which is where the set gets its name.

How many pieces are supplied?

34, which includes two extra queens, one per colour, so a promotion never needs an upturned rook. That is two more than a game actually uses.

Is a board included?

No, this listing is the chessmen only. The board is chosen separately, and it needs to be a generous one.
