The Lotus is a themed set and it makes no secret of it. The lotus flower is the starting point, and petal shapes run up through the whole army from the pawns to the king.
It is a distinctive and visually striking design. The king reaches 103mm, and master artisans with years in luxury chess pieces have hand carved and hand turned every chessman in the army.
The material is camel bone, not timber. Both armies are cut from the same bone and separated only by colour, so the two halves are alike in the hand and differ only where it counts on a board.
Bone takes fine detail and holds on to it. That is what keeps the petal work crisp the whole way down the army, on the pawns as much as on the king.
You will find it in our theme chess pieces.
The lotus is not an ornament stuck onto a standard piece. It is the design itself, and the petal forms are what give each chessman its outline, so nothing here follows the shapes a tournament player expects.
Each piece has been lovingly hand carved and hand turned. Repeated shapes ask a lot of a carver, because a slip on any single petal shows the moment the army is standing together.
Camel bone is the other half of the character. It is pale and close surfaced with no grain running through it, so the detail sits on an even ground and reads clearly from a chair.
The whole army comes to 390 grams. In the hand that reads as cool and light, not solid, and a piece lifts between two fingers, which suits a set you will want to handle.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 45mm to 55mm. This king's base is narrow for the height he reaches, so daylight stays around the back rank at either end of the range and any board in it will do.
Bone is an old material for chessmen and it does not behave like wood. There is no grain to work around, so the surface is even everywhere and the detail has an unbroken ground to sit on.
It is cool to hold. Pick up a knight and temperature is the first thing you notice, before shape or weight, and it is a small pleasure that a timber set cannot offer you.
The petal shapes read by the shadows that fall into them, which is why they stay legible from a seat at the table and do not flatten out under a lamp.
It also asks for a quiet board. There is a lot of shape in these pieces already, so a plain surface underneath lets the petal work do the talking instead of competing with it.
Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes bone crack. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The honest reason to own this one is that you like looking at it, and there is nothing wrong with that. The lotus shapes are the whole point of the set, and they are why it gets taken out of the cupboard.
The material earns its place too. Bone is cool and close in the hand, it holds detail that timber would soften, and the petal shapes come out of it crisper than they would from a block of wood.
It is a light army and you should know that before ordering. These pieces do not land on a square with any thump to them, and a player who wants that feel will not find it here.
The real limit is the design. Nothing in it follows the pattern a club player already knows, so anyone shopping for familiar shapes should start in our staunton chess pieces.

Squares of 45mm to 55mm. The foot of this king is slim for his height, so the army is comfortable at either end of that window and the board you own can decide it.
A themed pattern inspired by the lotus flower. The petal shapes carry up through the army, which makes it a decorative set rather than a tournament one.
Camel bone. The light army is bone in its natural colour and the dark army is bone brought to black, and that is what separates the two halves on a board.
390 grams for the whole army. It is a light set to hold, and the material is the thing you notice first when you reach for a piece.
32 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
