Description

Majestic Series Staunton 101mm Chess Pieces

The Majestic is an interesting take on the traditional Staunton pattern. It is elegantly designed and still very practical in its approach, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds.

The knights are where that shows. They are elegantly carved and they carry no sharp protruding points, so they are a pleasure to handle and there is nothing on them waiting to break off.

The king reaches 101mm and the whole army is double weighted, which gives this set the steadiness you want when a game runs long and the table gets busy.

Two materials carry the design. One option puts rosewood on the dark side and the other brings boxwood to a near black, with boxwood facing it on both.

Browse it alongside the rest of our wood chess pieces.

Majestic Series Staunton chess pieces in rosewood and boxwood

Key features

  • A considered take on the Staunton pattern, drawn with elegance and kept thoroughly practical for real play
  • Elegantly carved knights without a sharp protruding point on them, so nothing on the horse snags a sleeve or snaps off
  • Double weighted chessmen, which is the grade that keeps a piece standing exactly where a hand has put it
  • An army of 1,550 grams, so there is real substance in the palm every time a piece is lifted
  • Suited to tournament play and equally happy with a casual game across a kitchen table on a Sunday
  • Rosewood carries the dark side on the first option, with boxwood facing it across the board
  • The other option brings its boxwood to a near black, giving the harder contrast of the two
  • Thirty four chessmen and nothing under them, no board supplied and no storage box either

About the pieces

The Majestic keeps the Staunton vocabulary and spends its effort on proportion. The outline is familiar, and the army looks composed the moment it is standing on a board.

The knights do the most for it. They are elegantly carved, with mane and muzzle properly shaped and nothing on it waiting to catch.

It is built for use. Elegantly designed but very practical in approach, it is an ideal set for tournament play and just as happy with a casual game on a weeknight.

The army is double weighted and comes to 1,550 grams. There is enough there that the pieces settle when they are set down, and a position holds its shape through a long session.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 55mm to 60mm. The king takes a fair amount of his square at the narrow end, so if the choice is yours go to the larger figure and give the back rank some air.

Ebonised boxwood Majestic Series Staunton chessmen against the boxwood light army

Rosewood or ebonised

The two options are the same chessmen and the choice is purely about colour. They share the pattern, the height and the weight, so the game is identical whichever you take home.

Rosewood is the warm choice. There is grain running through the dark army, and a set like that sits in a room the way a good piece of furniture does.

The ebonised option is the harder contrast. Its boxwood is brought to a near black, so the dark army reads as a silhouette against the pale side and the board looks graphic from a distance.

Both stand on boxwood for the light army, so the pale side of the set is identical either way and the whole decision comes down to one line: warm grain or near black.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

What sells me on the Majestic is the knight. A horse built like that is one that lasts, and this one still has plenty of character in its face.

The mass is the second reason. A double weighted army behaves itself: pieces sit where they are put, a knocked table does not turn into a reset, and the position keeps its shape.

It is genuinely a dual purpose set. It has the manners for a tournament and the looks for a sideboard, and it does not apologise for either half of that.

The honest limit is that it stays inside the tradition and does nothing surprising. If you want a set whose first job is to be looked at, begin in our luxury chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What board squares do these need?

Squares of 55mm to 60mm, and the larger figure is the better buy wherever the board is yours to pick. The difference is bare timber around the back rank, which makes reaching in for a piece easier mid game.

Is this a standard Staunton?

It is a variation on the traditional Staunton. Everything sits where a player expects to find it, and the proportions through the army are drawn with elegance.

What are the knights like?

Elegantly carved, and with no sharp protruding points anywhere on them. They are a pleasure to play with, and nothing fragile is sticking out to catch on a sleeve.

How heavy is the set?

1,550 grams on either option. Double Weighted is the grade, and both materials land on the same total, so mass plays no part in the choice you are making.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
