Marengo Staunton 108mm Chess Pieces

Marengo was Napoleon's warhorse, and the knight is why this set carries his name.

It is drawn flaring and forward with the mane thrown back, and it is unmistakably the piece the whole pattern is built around. Everything else follows its lead.

The rest of the army is profiled in continuous curves, so the set has a flowing quality a stepped outline never achieves.

At a 108mm king it is a large, serious army, and at over two kilograms it is a heavy one.

Around it the curves run unbroken, so the shapes flow into one another and the whole thing reads as a single design instead of a collection of turned parts.

Bishop and knight stand level on matched bases, so you tell those two apart by shape alone. It takes a game to get used to and then it is completely natural.

These pieces suit larger boards, with squares of 55mm to 65mm, and 65mm is the size we would choose. The curved profiles need visible square around them, and at the bottom of the range there is not much.

Ebony is a flat near black with almost no visible grain. It gives the hardest contrast against the boxwood, and it shows the knight's profile most clearly, because nothing competes with the shape.

Bud rosewood is a warm reddish brown with tight figure running through it. It softens a large army and it sits more comfortably in a room that already has timber in it.

If the knight is the reason you are buying the set, ebony is the one that shows it off. If you want the army to feel warm rather than formal, take bud rosewood.
