This is the smallest Staunton set we carry that is still a proper weighted timber set rather than a travel compromise. An 80mm king, a 32mm base, 870g across 34 pieces, and an iron stud in every base.
The proportions hold together at the reduced scale. The king and queen share a 32mm base, the bishop and knight sit level at 62mm on 28mm bases, and the pawn comes in at 49mm. Nothing is thickened to survive the shrink, which is what usually spoils a small set.
The bases are finished with leather pads rather than felt. Bud rosewood or genuine ebony against boxwood, in our Staunton chess pieces.
Small chess sets usually go one of two ways. Either everything shrinks proportionally, which gives a delicate set that tips easily, or the bases are kept wide while the heights come down, which gives a squat set that looks wrong.
This one shrinks honestly. A 32mm base under an 80mm king is a ratio of 40 percent, right in the normal band, so it looks like a full sized set seen from further away rather than a miniature. The iron weighting keeps it stable at that scale.
What it cannot give you is presence. At 870g and 80mm this will never dominate a room the way a 110mm luxury set does. It is the right answer for a small table, a bookshelf, or a board you want to leave set up without it taking over. Compare against the full sized options in the Staunton chess pieces.
The hard part of a small chess set is the knight. Carved detail does not scale down freely: at some point the mane, the muzzle and the ears stop being separable and become a suggestion. Turned pieces have the opposite problem, where collars and rings that read well at full size disappear when reduced.
The approach here is to keep the proportions and accept less detail rather than to thicken features so they survive. That is why the bishop and knight sit level at 62mm on matched bases, and why the officers are plain. The set reads correctly at a glance, which is the test that matters.
Almost every set in our range uses thick green felt on the base. This one uses leather. Leather is thinner, harder wearing and slides more smoothly on a timber board, and it does not compress and flatten the way felt does after a few years of use.
Underneath sits an iron stud, which is where the 870g comes from. On a set this size the weighting matters more than it would at full scale, because a small piece with no ballast is genuinely easy to knock. The result is a compact set that still sits down with a proper thud.
The 32mm king base gives a range of 45mm to 55mm squares. At 45mm the set is compact and the board stays small, which is the point of buying at this size. At 55mm the pieces will look sparse on a full sized board, though it does no harm.
No board ships with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size so you can find the smaller boards directly.
Small sets are usually a compromise and this one mostly is not. Keeping the base to height ratio in the normal band means it reads as a proper Staunton rather than a miniature, and the iron weighting solves the stability problem that ruins most small sets. The leather base pads are a genuine upgrade over felt for durability. The honest limits are scale: the knight carries less detail than a full sized set can, and at 870g it will never have presence on a table. Buy it for a small board or a shelf, not as your main set.

Squares of 45mm to 55mm, from the 32mm king base. 45mm to 50mm keeps the set compact, which is usually the reason to buy at this size.
Dimensions and carving are identical. Bud rosewood is a deep figured reddish brown with moderate contrast against the boxwood. Genuine ebony is near black and uniform for the highest contrast.
Leather is thinner, harder wearing and slides more smoothly on a timber board. It also does not compress and flatten the way felt does over years of use.
No. It is a compact full specification set with iron weighting and 34 pieces. It is smaller than a tournament set but it is not a folding or magnetic travel set. Those are elsewhere in our chess pieces collection.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
