The Minimalist Tower Series takes a chess set somewhere abstract. The tower design brings form and function together in the one object, and the king stands 86mm.
Abstract does not mean arbitrary here. The dimensions follow the Staunton proportions, so the ranks step down in the order you already know and a position reads cleanly at a glance.
Two timbers carry the design. One dark army is golden rosewood; the other is boxwood darkened until it is all but black. Boxwood makes the light side under either choice.
It is a set for a modern room. The design was drawn to pair with a minimalist board, and it makes an easy gift for someone whose taste runs that way.
Look for it in our minimalist chess pieces.
The look is the whole point. This is classic Staunton elegance put through a sleek modern lens, and on a table the set has a quiet, architectural feel to it.
Play is easier than the shapes suggest. Each piece keeps a clear outline of its own, so you stop hunting for the bishop after a game or two.
Nothing here is fragile. The design is cleanly constructed and was drawn to stand the test of time, and on a set that gets played every week that matters as much as the look does.
The honest note is that abstraction is not for everyone. These pieces are abstractly designed by intent, and if the traditional Staunton figures are the thing you love about chess, this is the wrong set.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm, and of the two, the lower end suits this army better. The pieces stand on a narrow foot, so the wider you go the more empty board shows around each one.
Golden rosewood is the warmer choice. Its dark army is a mid brown, and against the pale boxwood the contrast stays gentle right across the board.
The ebonised option is the graphic one. Its dark army is the same pale timber carried down to all but black, which drives the two sides furthest apart and shows the geometry of the design at its strongest.
For a room done in white and steel, the ebonised set looks deliberate and of a piece with it. For a room that already has timber and warmth in it, golden rosewood is the one that will sit comfortably alongside what is there.
Everything else is shared. The shapes, the dimensions and the weight are identical, so this is a decision about colour and about nothing else.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
I like this one for what it leaves out.
Strip the ornament off a chess set and you find out how little of it you were using. The board stays legible, the pieces are comfortable to pick up, and the set does not argue with the room it sits in.
Buy it for a modern space, or for someone who wants their chess set to look like an object in its own right. If a traditional Staunton army is what you are really after, our staunton chess pieces are the better place to start.

Squares of 50mm to 55mm. Aim low inside that window: the pieces sit on a narrow foot, and a wider square leaves a good deal of daylight around every one of them.
Only underneath. The proportions are Staunton, so the ranks relate to one another as a player expects, but the figures themselves are abstract towers. Anyone buying for the classic Staunton shapes should read that as a no.
Golden rosewood gives a warm mid brown dark army beside the pale boxwood. The ebonised option brings that boxwood to within a shade of black, which draws a much harder line between the sides.
850 grams for the full set. Each man is weighted, so it carries proper mass for its size and does not shift after a move.
34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
