Napoleon Staunton 108mm Chess Pieces

The Napoleon is a large Staunton pattern, offered in a choice of three timbers, and the shapes are the same whichever one you pick.

A 108mm king puts it at the large end of playing sizes, the queen follows close behind rather than well under it, and the knight has been cut tall enough to stand a shade proud of the bishop beside it.

Letting the knight stand above the bishop is a deliberate reading of the pattern.

The series takes its name from Napoleon Bonaparte, and the reference is carried by the sovereign and his queen, which take more detail than anything else on the board. The pieces are triple weighted.

About the pieces

Start with what does not move. All three options come off the same pattern, so the king height, the weight and the square window are the same in every one. Buying on timber is a decision about looks, not about play.

Triple weighting at this size is a great deal of mass for 34 pieces, and the difference from a light set of the same height shows within a move or two. A heavy piece is set down deliberately and stops dead where it lands.

Over a long game that is restful, because you stop half thinking about the pieces and think about the position instead. It matters more here than on a shorter set, because there is more piece standing above the board.

The knight is where the hand time goes. Every other piece in a Staunton army is turned, a repeatable operation that comes out much the same every time. The horse cannot be turned, so it is shaped by hand, and how much hand time a maker will spend on it is the whole story.

These pieces suit large boards, with squares of 60mm to 65mm, and 65mm is the size to aim for. At 60mm the opening back rank stands shoulder to shoulder and the army looks imposing but tight, and below that it stops working altogether.

Choosing between the three timbers

Red and white lacquered boxwood is the loudest of the three. The colour sits on the surface as a finish, on top of the timber, so the separation between the armies is absolute and holds at a distance and under weak light.

The honest trade is that a hard knock against something harder will chip a lacquered edge, and a chip shows the pale boxwood underneath and stays visible, where a scuff on a bare timber piece darkens with handling and disappears.

Ebony against boxwood is the conventional answer: a dark side that is genuinely dark, with the grain still readable close up instead of flattened into a silhouette.

Bud rosewood is the warmest and most figured of the three, the burl coming and going across the turned collars. It deepens in colour over years, which is normal and is generally taken as an improvement.

The weight carries a trade of its own, and it is worth stating plainly. A set this heavy is slower to put away, awkward to carry, and unforgiving of a thin folding surface. It is built to live on a proper table.
