Description

New Columbian Staunton 98mm Chess Pieces

The New Columbian starts with the horse. Its posture and the symmetry running from the king to the pawn are what this design is about.

That symmetry is worth a second look. The shapes step down through the whole army as one family, so a full board reads as a single set of pieces and not as a collection of them.

This king measures 98mm, and the set is double weighted, heavily weighted at the base to increase stability and add ballast to the chessmen.

Each piece is carved and turned by master craftsmen with decades of experience at these shapes, and the set was made to take decades of use or to stand in a library and be looked at.

It sits among our staunton chess pieces.

Key features

  • The New Columbian series, with the posture of its knight and shapes that answer one another king to pawn
  • Symmetry held from the king down to the pawn, so the army steps down as one continuous family of shapes
  • Double weighted and heavily weighted at the base, which increases stability and adds ballast to every man in the army
  • Made to withstand decades of use, or to be a show stopper standing on a shelf in your library
  • A king at full height with a recommended square that runs up to 60mm, so this army asks for a generous board
  • Lovingly carved and turned by craftsmen with decades behind them at exactly these shapes and this scale
  • Ebony wood or bud rosewood carries the dark army, with boxwood opposite it and every other figure agreeing
  • The set ships as 34 chessmen and nothing else, two of them spare queens, and the board is a separate purchase

About the pieces

The knight is where to start. This is the New Columbian horse and the posture is deliberate, and the rest of the army has been drawn to stand with it rather than beside it.

Symmetry is the second half of the idea. Every shape belongs to the same family, the collars answer one another from the biggest piece to the smallest, and a set-up board looks designed all at once.

The weighting is heavy and it goes in at the base. The army weighs 1,360 grams with everything out of the box, and that mass is what stops a position drifting when somebody leans on the table.

Between the two options nothing moves except the timber on the dark side. Ebony wood is naturally black and gives the harder contrast; bud rosewood runs to red and brown and carries visible figure. Boxwood makes the pale side of both.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 55mm to 60mm. A board cut to anything under that is the wrong home for these chessmen, so settle the board question before you settle the timber.

Who this one is for

This set was designed to do two things: to withstand decades of use, and to stand in a library as something to look at. It is honest about wanting both jobs.

For a player, the argument is the weight and the scale. A heavy army at full height suits somebody who plays two or three evenings a week and wants the pieces to behave the same way every time.

For a room, it is the horse and the symmetry. Set up on a table it reads as one deliberate family of shapes, and that is a good reason to leave it standing between games.

Who it is not for is a player who likes a light piece in the hand. The mass at the base is deliberate here, and an army this heavy is noticed from the first move of a game.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

The horse is why this one is on my list. The posture is the whole idea of the series, and after enough years of looking at knights it is still the piece that settles a set for me.

The build is the second reason. It is double weighted with the mass at the base, the army has real presence on a table, and it was made to be used for decades and not admired for one.

It wants a big board and that is the thing to sort out first. Measure the squares you already have, because a generous one is what this design was cut around and a small board is the wrong place to put it.

It is not a reproduction of an older pattern and does not pretend to be. If a documented historical design is what you are after, our reproduction chess pieces are where that search ends.

Frequently asked questions

What is the New Columbian?

It is the name of this series of chessmen. What the design puts forward is the posture of the horse and a symmetry that holds all the way down the army.

What board squares do these need?

Squares of 55mm to 60mm. That is a big square and a smaller board will not suit this army, so take a tape to your own before ordering.

How heavy is the set?

1,360 grams all in. The grade is Double Weighted, and the mass goes in at the base where it does the most good.

Do the two timbers weigh the same?

Yes. They come out at the same figure and agree on every dimension, so the dark colour is the only thing that changes between them.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
