Description

New English Hand Carved Camel Bone 104mm Chess Pieces

The nobility had the pick of these patterns, and what drew them was the intricate carving and the uniqueness of the designs. This army is modelled on several of them, from the years before one standard shape won out.

This is a reproduction rather than a new design. The shapes are taken from chessmen that really existed, and it was the Staunton pattern arriving later that standardised what a chess piece looks like.

Both armies are camel bone. The light side is ivory white on either option, and what changes between them is the stain worked into the dark army.

The king stands 104mm and the set weighs 600 grams in total. They are light pieces to handle, and the lightness is what comes across before anything else does.

The listing lives in our reproduction chess pieces.

New English camel bone chess pieces with the black stained army facing the ivory white army

Key features

  • Drawn from several of the designs that predate the Staunton pattern, rather than from one historical set
  • Intricate carving is what made these designs desirable to the nobility in the first place
  • Fine carved work on every piece in the army, which is what this design is for
  • Camel bone on both armies, with the light side ivory white in either of the two colours offered
  • Two colours of one design: black stained against ivory white, or crimson stained against ivory white
  • A 104mm king that is not crowded on its square at either end of the range it suits
  • 600 grams for the full army, so every piece lifts easily and the set is no effort to set up
  • A complete army on each side and nothing more: no spare queens, no board, no storage box

About the pieces

The point of this set is that it comes from before the pattern everybody now knows. Several of those older designs feed into it, so the shapes on the board are not the ones a club player reaches for without thinking.

The carving is where the work goes. Every piece carries meticulous carving, and that is not something a general hand gets right: it takes a master carver, and it takes patience.

One set can take more than a week to finish. That is a long time to spend on a single army, and it is why the detail holds up when a piece is lifted off the board and looked at closely.

Nothing about this set asks to be packed away between games. It will sit out on a table and give somebody something to look at, and for a set carved like this one that is a fair part of the point.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm. The king sits well inside his square even at the low end of that range, so there is no need to push towards the wider end of the window.

Choosing between the two colours

Nothing separates the two options except colour. Same pattern, same scale, same carving, same ivory white light army, and the stain on the dark army is the only thing you are actually deciding between.

The black option is stained camel bone against ivory white. That is the conventional pairing for chessmen, and it is the more restrained of the two.

Crimson is the less usual choice. The dark army is stained red instead of black, which warms the whole board and gives the set a look that has nothing to do with a tournament.

The short version is that this is a question of taste. Black is the traditional pairing. Crimson is the one to choose if tradition is not what you are after.

Looking after them takes very little, and the routine is the same for either colour. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

The appeal for me is the age of the shapes. Set the board up and it looks like the game before anybody had agreed on what a chessman should be.

The carving is what I would point at. Over a week of one carver's time goes into a single army, and either that matters to a buyer or it does not. It is what I would be buying.

This is a light set and I would rather say so plainly. There is no heft in it, and anyone after a move that lands with some authority will not get that here.

The other thing to know is that none of these shapes follow the standard outline, and not everybody settles into that. If you want the familiar ones, our staunton chess pieces are where to look instead.

Frequently asked questions

What board squares do these need?

Squares of 50mm to 55mm. This king leaves clear board around him at both ends of that window, so you can match the set to a board you already have rather than buying one to fit.

What does pre-Staunton mean?

It means the design comes from before the Staunton pattern became the standard. This set is modelled on several of those earlier designs, so the pieces do not follow the standard outline that came afterwards.

How do the two colours differ?

Only on the dark army, which is stained black on one option and crimson on the other. Both options share the same ivory white camel bone on the light side, and the carving is identical on each.

How heavy is the set?

600 grams for all of it. The set is light to lift for a king of this height, so a move goes down quietly, and that is a thing to know before ordering.

How many pieces are supplied?

32 chess pieces, with no spare queens. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
