Description

Noble Bridle Series Ebony 123mm Chess Pieces

This is the bridle knight taken to its largest scale. The pattern is the same nineteenth century English idea, a strap cut across the muzzle and a browband above the eye, but here it sits on a 123mm king with a 48mm base, which puts it a full sixteen millimetres above the 107mm bridle sets and well beyond anything intended for club play.

The queen follows at 108mm, so the two royals hold the centre of the rank together, and the officers drop away sharply to 92mm bishops and 82mm knights. It is a set built around the top of the back rank.

Genuine ebony heartwood against boxwood, triple weighted to 2,000g and buff polished by hand. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection and the wider Staunton chess pieces range.

Noble Bridle Series chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood

Key features

  • 123mm (4.8 inch) king on a 48mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Queen at 108mm on a 43mm base, 15mm behind the king
  • Bridle knight, with the strap and browband cut across the muzzle and eye
  • Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark side, not ebonised boxwood
  • Triple weighted to 2,000g with an iron stud in every base
  • Buff polished by hand for a deep, even shine
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the Noble Bridle compares to the smaller bridle sets

The bridle knight runs through several of our sets, and the sensible way to choose between them is height first and timber second. This one is the tallest of the family at 123mm, against 107mm for the American and CB Bridle patterns, 103mm for the Bridle Knight Series and 95mm for the Sunrise Kings Bridle.

Sixteen millimetres reads as a large difference on a table, and the base grows with it: 48mm here against 43mm to 44mm on the Bridle Knight Series and the American Bridle, though the CB Bridle Series Luxury runs wider still at 49mm. A 48mm base is what pushes this set onto 60mm squares while the 43mm and 44mm patterns sit comfortably on 55mm, and it is the practical constraint worth checking before ordering.

On weight it is triple weighted to 2,000g, well clear of the double weighted sheesham version at 1,440g, though the CB Bridle Series Luxury is heavier again at 2,300g. Compare the rest in our wood chess pieces range.

What 123mm means in practice

A king this tall is roughly a quarter above the 95mm to 100mm tournament standard, which puts it firmly outside rated play and some way outside what most club boards are built for. This is a set that lives on a table where it can be seen.

The 48mm base is the harder constraint. On 55mm squares the king fills most of its square and the officers on 41mm bases start to touch along the back rank. Sixty millimetre squares give it the room the proportions assume, and that is a specialist board size worth confirming you own rather than discovering afterwards.

The bridle knight at full size

The advantage of carving this pattern large is that the detail survives. The strap runs from behind the ear down across the cheek and over the muzzle, and at this scale it sits clearly proud of the surface with the browband distinct above the eye. On smaller bridle sets the same cut has to be shallower and reads more faintly.

Each knight is worked freehand, so the four in the set vary a little in the run of the strap and the angle of the head. Every other piece is turned against a metal profile, which keeps the pawns identical and the rooks square to each other. The variation belongs in the knights and is the mark of hand carving.

Bridle knight carving on the genuine ebony Noble Bridle Series chess pieces

Ebony, weighting and finish

The dark side is genuine ebony heartwood rather than ebonised or dyed boxwood, so the near black is in the timber and shows a faint dark figure under direct light. It also means the colour does not wear off the high points of a piece over years of handling, which is the usual failure mode of a dyed set.

Triple weighting brings the set to 2,000g, around 59g a piece, and the buff polish is applied by hand rather than sprayed. No board is included. Every board in our chess boards collection lists its square size.

Our expert take

If you want the bridle knight and you want presence, this is the one to buy. At 123mm in genuine ebony with 2,000g of triple weighting behind it, it is the tallest version of the pattern we carry and among the most substantial, and the carving benefits from the extra scale, because the strap and browband read clearly instead of hinting at themselves. The constraint is real and I would not soften it: a 48mm base wants 60mm squares, most people own 50mm or 55mm, and a set this size on a board a size too small looks cramped and plays worse. Check your board first. If it fits, this is a set that will sit out and be looked at for years. If it does not, the 107mm bridle patterns give you the same knight on a board you already own.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. The 48mm king base is the constraint rather than the height, and on 55mm squares the back rank becomes crowded. Confirm your square size before ordering.

Is this set tournament legal?

No. At 123mm it sits roughly a quarter above the 95mm to 100mm tournament standard. It is a display and home play set.

Is this genuine ebony or ebonised wood?

Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark pieces, not boxwood dyed or stained black. The colour is in the timber, so it will not wear off the high points over time.

How does this differ from the smaller bridle sets?

Height and weighting. This is 123mm on a 48mm base and triple weighted to 2,000g. The other bridle patterns run from 95mm to 107mm, most of them on 43mm to 44mm bases, and the sheesham version is double weighted.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
