This is a full Staunton army in painted boxwood under a lacquer finish, and it comes two ways. The light side is ivory white on both of them, and the dark side is either red or black. The king stands 97mm.
Past that colour there is nothing between the two. Same shapes, same heights, same weight, same count, so the only decision is which pair of armies you would rather sit down to.
The shapes are ordinary Staunton, which is the whole idea. A cross on the king, a coronet on the queen, a mitre on the bishop and a horse for the knight, all familiar to anyone who has played.
The pieces are weighted, so a man lands with some authority and sits where you leave it. That is the difference between a set that plays and a set that only looks the part.
There are 34 pieces supplied and two of them are spare queens, so a promotion is played with the proper piece from the very first game. Browse it with the rest of our staunton chess pieces.
These are painted boxwood chessmen. White is the light army on either option, and the dark army is red on one and black on the other, with the same lacquer finish carrying across both.
The scale is the interesting thing here. It is a tall king on a fairly narrow footing, and that combination is why the board window below sits where it does.
The set is weighted. All 34 pieces together come to 1,050 grams, and in play that gives you a man that rocks and stays upright when a sleeve catches it, and stops dead when you set it down.
The lacquer gives the pieces a bright, settled surface. Red carries warmth across a room and black goes deep and flat under a lamp, and either way the outlines stay crisp from the far chair.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 45mm to 50mm, and the upper figure is the one to aim at. At the tight end of the window the men crowd each other along the back rank, so take a tape to your own board first.
There is no difference in how the two behave. The dimensions match, the weight matches, the finish is the same and the count is the same, so nothing you decide here changes what happens on the board.
Red and ivory white is the choice for a set you want to see. Red is a warm colour with no reserve about it, and on a lit table it is the first thing a visitor notices.
Black and ivory white is the quieter one. It asks nothing at all of the eye, which counts for something on a set you mean to use two or three evenings a week and never think about.
So take whichever you would rather look at. Buy red if you want the board to be part of the room when nobody is playing on it, and buy black if you would sooner the pieces disappeared into the game.
Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
I would buy this one for the combination. A full height king that still asks for a mid size square is a useful thing, and if you already own a board in that window, this is how you get big men standing on it.
Colour is the rest of the argument. A painted army has a cheerfulness that a timber tone cannot manage, and this one still plays like a serious set the moment somebody sits down to it.
This is not a set for anybody who wants the timber to be the point. There is no grain on show and no patina coming, so if that is what you enjoy in a chess set, our luxury chess pieces are the place to look.
The one job to do before ordering is get a tape over your own squares. This army wants a mid size square, and plenty of people have never measured the board they already own.
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
Squares of 45mm to 50mm. Take the upper figure where the board is a fresh purchase, because the men stand close together on the back rank at the bottom of that range.
Only the colour. Everything measurable about the two is identical, down to the spare queens, so the choice is about what you want to look at.
1,050 grams for all 34 pieces together. They are weighted, which is what keeps a man on its square when a game turns quick.
97mm, which is full playing height. The rest of the army is scaled beneath it, and every figure is in the table below.
34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
