Description

Parker Staunton Carved 100mm Chess Pieces

The Parker's trick is the finish. Both armies are boxwood, one clearly darker in tone than the other, and both shine with the warmth and depth of a rich lacquered gloss.

It gives the set a shine you do not often get from timber. Light runs along the shoulder of a bishop and down the flank of a rook, and a full board looks lit from the inside.

The pieces are hand carved, so the outlines carry the small variations that tell you a hand was on them. The king is 100mm, a generous height to play a long game against.

The army weighs 1,100 grams all told. In the hand the pieces feel quick and easy to move rather than laborious, and a long session never turns into hard work.

Browse it alongside the rest of our staunton chess pieces.

Parker Staunton carved chess pieces in lacquered boxwood, the darker army facing the lighter

Key features

  • Traditional Staunton outlines on every piece, each drawn to a shape a player already knows
  • A rich lacquered gloss finish, so every piece in the army shines with real warmth and depth
  • One timber across both armies, the two sides set apart by depth of tone alone
  • The full army weighs 1,100 grams, a moderate mass that keeps the pieces quick in the hand
  • Two extra queens are supplied, so either player can promote without borrowing a rook from the box
  • A generous playing height, easy to sit across from on a dining table set up for the evening
  • Made for collectors and for serious players, so it holds up to being used as well as looked at
  • Chessmen only: no board sits under this army, and storage is a separate purchase too

About the pieces

The Parker is a Staunton that puts its whole personality into the surface. The outlines are traditional and unfussy, every piece is exactly the shape you expect, and then the finish arrives and does the talking.

The proportions are calm and the shoulders are soft, and every piece is easy to pick out at a glance. Nothing on a crowded board needs a second look before a move is made.

The darker side sits in a deep burnt brown. It is the same timber as the lighter army, which is part of why the two sides sit together so comfortably on a board.

The pieces carry warmth and depth from a rich lacquered gloss, and that shine is the first thing anybody notices. It is a bright set under a lamp and a quieter one in daylight, which is a useful pair of moods to own.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 60mm. That window is a wide one and its two ends genuinely play differently: the back rank closes up at the bottom of it, so aim at the upper half.

Living with a gloss finish

A lacquered set asks something slightly different of you than a bare one does. The gloss shows a fingerprint, and an army left standing in a bright room will show dust sooner than a flat surface would.

The upside is that the gloss reads even across the army. Colour does not shift from one piece to the next, and the shine on a pawn is the same shine that is on the king beside it.

It also photographs well, which matters more than people usually admit. A set living on a sideboard gets looked at far more often than it gets played, and this one rewards the looking.

The contrast holds up under artificial light as well. The darker army still reads as dark against the lighter one from across a room, and nobody has to squint to tell the two apart.

Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

There are two kinds of buyer for the Parker and only one of them is a player. For anyone after a set that makes a room look better the moment it is unpacked, this is an easy recommendation.

For the player it still works. The outlines are standard Staunton, nothing is hard to identify once a real position is on the board, and the pieces are quick to pick up and quick to set down.

The board is where I would slow you down. The recommended window is wide, and at its narrow end the king takes up most of his square with very little bare board showing around him.

And if a gloss is not your thing, know that early. Some people want timber to look like timber and nothing more, and they will be happier starting in our minimalist chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Which board squares suit this set?

Squares of 50mm to 60mm. That window is wide, and the upper half of it is where this king has room to stand without crowding the pieces on either side of him.

What is the finish on these pieces?

Both armies are boxwood. One side is markedly deeper in tone than the other, and the finish across the set is a rich lacquered gloss, which is where its warmth and depth come from.

How heavy is the set?

1,100 grams for the full army. That is a moderate figure, and it keeps the pieces easy to handle through a long session without feeling flimsy under a hand.

Are the pieces hand carved?

Yes. Each piece is hand carved by skilled artisans, and the set is a fine example of artistic craftsmanship in a traditional Staunton outline.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
