Description

Prestige Staunton Series Anjan 100mm Chess Pieces

A 45mm base under a 100mm king is the number that matters here. It puts the king base at nearly half its own height, which is broad by any modern standard, and it is what gives this set a presence that the fairly ordinary 100mm height would not suggest on its own.

The timber does the rest. Anjan (Hardwickia binata) is a dense Indian hardwood, hard enough that it was traditionally cut for cart axles, and it finishes to a deep reddish brown under hand polish rather than lacquer. Against natural boxwood the contrast is warm and clear.

1,560g across 34 pieces, weighted and felted. It is the heavier of the two anjan wood sets in our Staunton chess pieces.

Prestige Staunton Series chess pieces in anjan wood and natural boxwood

Key features

  • 100mm (4.0 inch) king on a wide 45mm base, sized for 55mm squares
  • Anjan wood (Hardwickia binata) dark side with natural boxwood
  • 1,560g across the full set, around 46g a piece
  • Officers all on a matched 36mm base for an even back rank
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Hand polished rather than lacquered, so the colour deepens with use
  • Hand carved knights with clean mane and muzzle detail
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the Prestige Staunton Series compares to other Staunton chess pieces

We carry two anjan wood Staunton sets and they are aimed at different players, so the comparison is worth making directly. The timbers, the finish and the carving are the same in both.

This one is the substantial version: a 100mm king on a 45mm base, 1,560g, with the bishop, knight and rook sharing a 36mm foot. The British Staunton Series in our Staunton chess pieces is 93mm on a 40mm base at 1,200g, with narrower bases throughout and a slim 27mm pawn.

Choose this one for mass, a fuller back rank and better stability. Choose the British Staunton for an open board and faster handling. Both sit on 55mm squares.

Anjan, and why it is worth the extra trouble

Most mid brown chess sets use sheesham, which is plentiful, consistent and easy to turn. Anjan is harder and denser, and it is more work to machine cleanly, which is why fewer sets use it despite the timber being widely available in India.

The return on that difficulty is durability. A hand polished anjan piece resists the small dents that accumulate on a set in weekly use, the colour deepens over years instead of fading, and the hardness lets the knight hold its carved detail rather than softening under handling. On a set at this price it is a meaningful upgrade over the default.

Where the weight sits

At 1,560g across 34 pieces this set averages around 46g, which is a third more than the British Staunton Series in the same timber. The extra goes where it should: the king base is 45mm against 40mm, the officers sit on 36mm against 33mm to 35mm, and the pawn base steps up to 30mm from 27mm.

What that produces is a set you can move quickly without watching it. The pieces do not rock when set down hard, a knocked table does not scatter the position, and the back rank fills the board properly instead of looking sparse.

Choosing a board for a 45mm base

The 45mm king base puts this set on 55mm squares. It is one of the cases where the king height would mislead you: a 100mm king often sits on a 50mm board, but a 45mm base on 50mm squares fills ninety percent of the square and the back rank becomes solid.

No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size so you can match the 55mm requirement directly, and the wider chess pieces collection lists square sizing on every set.

Our expert take

Between the two anjan sets, this is the one I would recommend to most people. The 45mm base under a 100mm king gives it genuine stability and a back rank that fills the board, and at roughly 46g a piece it has enough weight to feel considered without slowing you down. Anjan is a real step up in hardness over the sheesham that dominates this price bracket. The caveat is board size: it needs 55mm squares despite the moderate king height, so check what you have before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 55mm. That comes from the wide 45mm king base rather than the 100mm height. On a 50mm board the base would fill nearly the whole square.

What is anjan wood?

Hardwickia binata, a dense Indian hardwood traditionally used where strength mattered. It works to a deep reddish brown, takes a hand polish without lacquer, and darkens with handling.

How does this differ from the British Staunton Series?

Same timbers and finish, different scale. This set is 100mm on a 45mm base at 1,560g with matched 36mm officers. The British Staunton is 93mm on a 40mm base at 1,200g with narrower bases throughout.

How heavy are they?

1,560g across 34 pieces, around 46g a piece. That is solid mid weight. Heavier sets are available across our chess pieces collection.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
