The Prime Staunton takes the traditional Staunton outline and finishes it in burgundy and white lacquer over boxwood. The king reaches 97mm at the crown.
Burgundy is a deep red with brown behind it, so the dark side still behaves as a dark side across the table while carrying a colour that is plainly its own.
The shapes are where this design declares itself. Broad bases sit under slim, refined silhouettes, and the effect along a back rank is upright and firmly planted.
There are 34 pieces, two of them spare queens, so promoting a pawn is done with the proper man from the very first game.
It answers to a serious game and it holds a room when it is left standing, and the lacquer finish is what lets it do both. We list it among our staunton chess pieces.
Both armies are lacquered boxwood. The dark side is burgundy and the light side is white, and the same finish carries across all of them.
The Prime Staunton is its own design. The bases are notably broad and the men taper cleanly above them, which keeps the whole army looking steady on the board without looking heavy.
What the lacquer changes is the register. The outline underneath it is the traditional one, so nothing about the game is unfamiliar, but the finish puts the set in the present instead of looking backwards.
The pieces are weighted. All 34 of them together come to 1,050 grams, and a man set down in a hurry stops where you leave it.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm, and both ends of that window are a proper fit. Measure the squares you already own; choosing a board fresh, the wider end leaves a little extra bare board around the broad feet.
Every man in this army is weighted and balanced, and those are two different things. The weight is what keeps a piece where you put it; the balance is what lets it sit down square rather than settling at its leisure.
Together they are what makes play smooth. A move can be made quickly and nothing needs steadying afterwards, and a rank set out in a hurry still looks tidy when you sit back from it.
Stability tells most in the scrappy part of a game. Men get put down hard when there is a clock running, and an army that takes that without rocking or nudging its neighbours is one less thing to think about.
The same qualities serve the other half of what this set does. It is made for a serious game and for standing out on a table afterwards, and a piece that stays exactly where it was left does both of those jobs without any fuss.
Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The geometry is the thing I like here. A full height king on a broad foot looks planted from the first move, and it behaves exactly the way it looks.
The burgundy is the other half of it. It is a dark army by function and a coloured one by appearance, so the board looks like something and still plays like a proper set.
It plays as well as it looks. The men are weighted and they are balanced, so they go down where you send them and stay there, and an hour in you stop noticing the finish and simply play.
And if what you want is a traditional hardwood army in brown and cream, go and buy one of those. This is lacquer and it is meant to look current, so start in our reproduction chess pieces if that is more your thing.

Squares of 50mm to 55mm, and the set is at home anywhere in that window. Measure the board you already own before you order. On a new board the top of the range shows those broad feet off best, but neither end is a compromise.
A dark red carrying a good deal of brown. Against the white army it reads unmistakably as the dark side, and it shows far more warmth once you pick a man up.
That is what this particular pattern is called. The outline is traditional, and what marks it out is the breadth at the foot and the clean taper of the men standing on it.
97mm, which puts the set squarely at tournament scale. The full ladder of heights and bases is in the table underneath.
34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
