Pro Staunton 104mm Chess Pieces

This is a club and tournament set. The king stands 104mm and the pieces are double weighted for serious play.

The knights are the piece to look at. They are well figured and finely carved, and they stand inside an army proportioned around long games and quick handling.

Three timbers are offered for the dark army: golden rosewood, ebonised boxwood, or rosewood. The light side is plain boxwood in all three.

The complete set weighs 1,400 grams, and weight has been added at the base of every piece. That is where the stability comes from, and the heft you feel picking one up.

The Pro Staunton is a playing set first. Every shape conforms to the Staunton pattern, so there is nothing to interpret and nothing to learn before you sit down with it.

The knight is where the character of the design sits. It is detailed with care, and it stays readable from a standing position over the board during a long analysis.

Look down at the feet and the king takes the broadest of them, with the queen next. Below that pair the widths do not simply fall away in order, which is the interesting part of this design.

The rook is the one to notice. It plants on a broad foot in every option, wider than the knight standing beside it, so the corner of the rank looks solid and the pawn is left narrowest at the front.

These pieces suit larger boards, with squares of 55mm to 60mm. Take the wider end where the board allows, because the king stands on a broad foot and the position wants some air around it.

Choosing between the three timbers

Plain boxwood stands on the light side of all three options, so what you are choosing is the dark half of the set and the mood it puts on the board.

Golden rosewood is the warm one. It reads brown with an open grain and suits a lighter board in a room with daylight in it. It is also sold as sheesham, which is the same timber under a second name.

Rosewood is deeper and redder than the golden rosewood, with more colour held in the timber and a quieter figure through it. This option is drawn on slightly different proportions of its own, though the king stands to the same height as the other two.

Ebonised boxwood is brought to a near black, and it gives the strongest separation of the three. Against the pale boxwood army the position stays clear under a lamp or in a photograph.

Grain and finish vary a little from set to set across all three timbers, so no two armies end up looking quite alike.

For the clearest board take the ebonised. For warmth take the golden rosewood. For the deepest colour of the three take the rosewood.
