Description

Pro Staunton Painted Boxwood 76mm Chess Pieces

Painted chessmen are a different proposition from timber ones. The colour is flat and even, the contrast is absolute, and the pieces read instantly from right across a table.

This is the Pro Staunton pattern, the everyday club shape, done in painted boxwood at a compact 76mm king.

You can have it black against white or red against white. The carving is identical either way, so the only decision is which board you want to be looking at.

It is small enough to leave out on a side table or use as an analysis set, without giving up a proper Staunton outline, and it is weighty enough not to feel like a compromise.

You will find it among our Staunton chess pieces.

Pro Staunton chessmen in black and white painted boxwood, 76mm king

Key features

  • The Pro Staunton pattern, the everyday club shape, at a compact 76mm king
  • One carving in two colourways: black against white, or red against white
  • Flat, even colour that reads instantly from across a table
  • Well figured knights on an otherwise conventional outline
  • Identical dimensions in both colourways, matching to the millimetre
  • Bishop, knight and rook share a base width, so the outer rank sits on one footprint
  • Compact enough for an analysis set, a small table or a shelf
  • 34 pieces, including a spare queen for each side when a pawn promotes

About the pieces

Paint does something timber cannot, which is give you absolute contrast without relying on how the light falls.

On a dark evening or under a single lamp, a painted set stays completely legible where two natural timbers can start to converge into each other. That is worth more than it sounds during a long game.

The pattern underneath is the familiar Pro Staunton, so nothing about it feels experimental. The knights carry the figured cut the series is known for, and the rest of the army is conventional enough that anyone will recognise it immediately.

The scale is the other half of the appeal. At this size the set sits on a side table or a desk and still looks like a proper chess set and not a travel compromise, and it is heavy enough to stay where you put it.

These pieces suit smaller boards, with squares of 40mm to 50mm, and 50mm is the comfortable end. At 40mm the set still fits and looks purposeful, but the front two ranks sit shoulder to shoulder with no spare surface between the feet.

Pro Staunton chessmen in red and white painted boxwood, 76mm king

Choosing between the two colourways

Every dimension is identical and the light army is white painted boxwood in both. Only the dark side changes.

Black against white is the classic, and the separation between the armies is at its maximum. It is the one that reads most cleanly at a distance, and the safer choice if the set is going to be used for serious play.

Red against white is the warmer, friendlier board. The contrast is a little softer than the black, which some players prefer over a long session.

Both are perfectly legible; the black is simply the harder contrast of the two.

Both are painted boxwood, so they behave identically in the hand and wear at the same rate. Whichever you pick, the pieces feel the same and the game plays the same.

The trade is what happens at an edge. The colour sits on the surface, so a knock hard enough to break through it shows pale boxwood underneath, and that mark is more visible than the same knock on a stained piece.

Care is simple. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters and air vents, dust it with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, furniture polish and solvent based cleaners alone.

Our expert take

Legibility is the case for this one. A painted set never has an ambiguous piece, which sounds like a small thing until you have played a long game under a poor light.

The compact size is what makes it so useful. It is the set that ends up living on a desk or a side table because it fits there, and it gets played with far more than a display army ever does.

It is not a showpiece and it does not pretend to be. If you want timber and figure to look at, there is plenty to compare in our luxury chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two colourways?

Only the dark side. One is black painted boxwood, the other red, and the light army is white painted boxwood in both. Every dimension, the carving and the weight are identical, so it is purely a question of how you want the board to look.

What square size suits them?

40mm to 50mm squares, and 50mm is the comfortable end. At 40mm the set still fits but the front two ranks sit shoulder to shoulder with nothing showing between the feet.

How many pieces are included?

34, which is two more than a game uses, so there is a spare queen for each side when a pawn promotes. No board is included, so that is chosen separately.

How durable is the painted finish?

It stands up to ordinary play, but the colour sits on the surface. A knock hard enough to break through shows pale boxwood underneath, so it asks for a little more care in handling and storage than a timber finish does.

How heavy is the set?

The complete 34 pieces come to 800 grams, so the individual pieces have enough substance to sit down properly on the board and stay put.

Is a chess board included?

No, this listing is the chessmen only. Pick a board at the square size given above and the set will sit on it comfortably.
