Description

Professional Staunton 76mm Chess Pieces

The Professional Staunton is a playing set first and last. The king stands 76mm, the pieces are weighted, and the army is meant for club and tournament use.

It comes in two timbers. The dark army is either golden rosewood or an ebonised boxwood taken down close to black, and the light side is boxwood in both cases.

The weighting is what you feel the moment you pick a piece up. There is enough ballast in the foot to hold a man where you leave him, which counts for a lot when a game gets quick.

There are 34 chess pieces in all: the 32 an army needs, and two more so each side has a queen in reserve. Both options are cut to the same sizes, so what you pick in the dropdown decides the colour of the dark army and nothing else.

You will find it in our staunton chess pieces.

Ebonised boxwood Professional Staunton chessmen with the boxwood light army

Key features

  • A 76mm king in a Professional Staunton pattern, weighted, and built for club and tournament play
  • Two timbers to choose from: a golden rosewood dark army, or one in boxwood ebonised close to black, against boxwood
  • Weighted pieces, so each one carries enough ballast at the foot to stay standing where you put it down
  • Heights and shapes are shared by both options, leaving the timber as the single decision you have to make
  • 600 grams for the whole army, which gives the set real presence without making it a chore to carry
  • Detailing is clean and even across the ranks, so the board stays easy to read during a long game
  • The king stands on a broad foot, so aim for the wider end of the recommended square window
  • 34 chess pieces are supplied on their own, with no board and no storage box, so both are chosen separately

About the pieces

This army is built to be used, and it behaves like it. The proportions run evenly from the king down, and nothing on the set is decorative at the expense of play.

The weighting does the real work. Set a man down and he stays put, so a nudged table or a hard clock press at the end of a game does not scatter the position.

The detailing is fine without being fussy, which keeps the two armies easy to tell apart across a table and comfortable to handle all evening.

The one thing to watch is the foot. The king is broad at the bottom for its height, so the back rank fills up quickly if the squares are on the small side.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 38mm to 45mm. At 38mm the king and queen leave very little board showing between them.

Golden rosewood and boxwood Professional Staunton chessmen

Choosing between the two timbers

Boxwood carries the light army in both options, so the choice only ever changes the colour of the men facing it. The board you already own is the thing to think about first.

A dark board is the awkward case. Golden rosewood keeps its edges against a deep surface, while an ebonised army can merge into the board beneath it and give up the outline of each piece.

On a pale or natural board both look right, and it turns into a question of taste. The honey brown of the rosewood sits close to the boxwood in tone and gives you a gentle looking table.

The ebonised option draws the harder line. Its dark men are brought right down towards black, so the two armies split apart at a glance, and nothing else about the pair changes.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

This is the sort of set I point people towards when they want one army to do everything. It is weighted for real games, easy to read across a busy board, and it looks right on a table in between.

Measure your squares before you order. The king has a broad foot, so the narrow end of the window is tight for it, and the wider end is the one to go for if you have the choice.

If what you are after is something to display rather than to play with, our luxury chess pieces are a better place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What square size do these pieces need?

Squares of 38mm to 45mm. Take the wider end where you can, because the bases are broad for this height and the back rank gets tight at the other end of the window.

Are these pieces weighted?

Yes, both options are. The weight is carried low in the base, which is what keeps a piece upright when the table takes a knock or a clock is hit hard.

How do the two timbers differ?

The dark army, and nothing more. One choice gives you honey brown golden rosewood, the other boxwood ebonised down towards black. Every size and the weight are the same across both.

How heavy is the set?

600 grams for all 34 pieces. That is enough to give the army some authority on the board, and still light enough to move about the house without a second thought.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
