Description

Professional Staunton Hand Carved 101mm Chess Pieces

The first thing you notice is the shine. Every piece here carries a rich lacquer polish, and the light in a room comes straight back off the shoulders of the kings and queens.

Under that finish sits a Professional Staunton, hand carved and sculpted piece by piece, with the classic outline held to from the king all the way down to the pawn.

The king stands 101mm. Boxwood makes both armies, and the two differ in tone, so what separates the halves is a shift in depth of colour inside one timber.

They feel smooth and well balanced in the hand. That is the part a photograph cannot show you, and it is the part you notice somewhere around the tenth move of an evening.

We keep it with the rest of our staunton chess pieces.

Professional Staunton hand carved boxwood chess pieces with a polished finish

Key features

  • A Professional Staunton hand carved in boxwood, with the classic outline kept on every piece in the army
  • Polished to a high shine, so light comes back off the chessmen the way it does off polished timber
  • Boxwood on both sides of the board, the two armies differing in tone, warm under a lamp
  • Smooth to the touch and well balanced when lifted, which is what makes a long game a pleasure
  • An army of 1,180 grams all told, a moderate mass rather than a heavy one to lift
  • Cut for 55mm squares, so choosing the board underneath this army takes no guesswork at all
  • Designed for play and for display, and an easy gift for somebody who already owns a good board
  • Thirty four chessmen and nothing else, two spare queens among them, with no board and no box

About the pieces

This is the Staunton pattern played straight. No piece here has been redrawn for effect, so the whole army is legible at a glance and nothing on the board needs a second look.

The work is hand carved and each piece is sculpted in its own right. That shows most in the knights and in the crowns, where there is detail for the eye to settle on.

The finish is the character of this one. Both armies are polished to a high shine, and the pieces catch light in a way a matt surface simply does not.

Mass is the one place to set expectations. At 1,180 grams the army is moderate, so the pieces are easy to handle all evening, and a move lands without much weight behind it.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 55mm. The king is narrow enough at the foot that bare board still shows between the men, and a full back rank has room to spare.

What the polished finish does

A finish this bright is a decision and it changes how a set lives in a room. These pieces read bright on a table, the highlights move as you move, and the board looks dressed even with no game on it.

It flatters the boxwood. The lighter army comes up clean and creamy under the shine, and the darker side gains depth, so the two halves separate cleanly once a position is on the board.

There is a trade to name. A glossy surface shows fingerprints where a matt one hides them, so a soft cloth over the set at the end of a session is worth the thirty seconds it takes.

In play it makes no odds at all. The pieces are smooth to lift, nothing on them catches, and the finish will not make a piece slip out of a hand or skate across a board.

Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

I like this one for how it looks on a table. A Staunton with this much shine on it is a cheerful object, and a set you want to leave standing is a set that gets played rather than shelved.

The hand carved work is honest. The knights have some expression in them and the crowns hold their shape, which is where an army sculpted piece by piece earns its keep over the years.

The mass is moderate and I would not oversell it. This is a comfortable set to handle across an evening, though anybody hoping for real heft behind each move should factor that in.

The one thing to get right is the board, and the square size in the specifications below is the one to match. If a themed army appeals more, start in our theme chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What board squares do these need?

Squares of 55mm. Match the board to that figure and the back rank will sit exactly as the design intends, with clear space around each piece.

Is this a traditional Staunton?

Yes. It follows the classic Staunton outline with nothing in the army reinterpreted, which is why every piece is readable at a glance to anybody who has played before.

What is the finish like?

A high shine. Both armies are boxwood polished to a lacquer finish, and the two sides differ in tone, so the set reads bright on the board and looks well under a lamp.

How heavy is the set?

1,180 grams for the whole army. That is a moderate figure, not a heavy one, and the pieces stay light enough in the hand to move quickly through a long game.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square size in the specifications below.
