Rare Columbian 117mm Chess Pieces

The Rare Columbian is a large Staunton, triple weighted, standing 117mm at the king and made for boards cut between 60mm and 65mm. It is a big army and it looks like one.

It is meant for a permanent board on a surface that does not get cleared every evening. Set the position up once and it stays readable from anywhere in the room, which matters more than it sounds when a game runs over several sittings.

Two timbers are offered on the dark side, ebony or bud rosewood, and the light army is plain boxwood either way. The knights are identical in both, with a distinctive crisscross mane.

The complete set runs to 2,250 grams, and the triple weighting brings that mass low in each base so nothing shifts once a move has been made.

The knights carry the character. The manes run in a crisscross across the neck, giving that piece a texture nothing else in the army has, and it holds up close as well as it does across a table.

Bishop and knight stand on the same width, so the two of them read as a matched pair either side of the rook. It is a small thing that stops a wide back rank looking scattered.

The royals are the exception to that evenness. King and queen both plant wider than anything beside them, so the centre of the rank holds the weight of the position and the eye goes there first.

These pieces suit large boards, with squares of 60mm to 65mm, and it wants the wider half of that window. Anything smaller and the army crowds its own squares.
