Red Rum won the Aintree Grand National three times and was placed second twice more, and never once fell in a hundred races. The knight on this set is carved to catch that horse mid gallop, and it is the piece the whole design is built around.
Everything else is scaled to carry it. The king stands at 112mm on a 49mm base, well above tournament height, and the set weighs 2,240g triple weighted. These are large pieces with real presence on a table.
Two timbers, bud rosewood or genuine ebony, both against boxwood. It sits at the top of our luxury chess pieces collection.
Bud rosewood and genuine ebony give the same set two quite different characters. Bud rosewood is a deep reddish brown with pronounced figure, and the burl gives swirls and darker streaks that vary piece to piece, so no two sets are identical.
Genuine ebony is close to pure black with almost no visible figure, which puts all the attention on the carving rather than on the timber. On a set whose selling point is the knight, that is a real argument for the ebony.
Dimensions and weight are identical across both at 2,240g, so this is purely a decision about how you want the set to look. The wider range sits across our wood chess pieces range.
A standard weighted set carries a single metal slug in the base. Double weighting increases it, triple weighting increases it again, and at 2,240g across 34 pieces this set averages around 66g a piece.
The effect at 112mm is that the pieces feel planted rather than merely heavy. A tall piece has its mass high up and wants to topple, so the counterweight in the foot is doing structural work as well as giving the set its hand feel. Picking up the king for the first time is the moment most people understand what they have bought.
Squares of 60mm. That is larger than the tournament standard of 50mm to 55mm and it is not optional here, because a 49mm base on a 55mm square leaves almost no visible margin and the back rank becomes a solid wall of timber.
Boards at 60mm are a specialist size and worth confirming before you buy. A set at this height on a board a size too small looks cramped in a way that undoes the presence you paid for.
The turned pieces are guided by metal profiles, so pawns and rooks come out identical to each other. The knights are carved freehand, which means every one carries slight variation in the set of the head and the flow of the mane.
That variation is the point rather than a defect. What the carver is after is the shape of a horse in full gallop, head low and forward, and the detail runs to the eyes, nostrils, teeth and the lay of the mane. No board is included with these pieces, so pair them from our chess boards collection at 60mm.
This is a display set that plays, and it should be bought in that order. The knight carving is the reason it exists and it holds up to close inspection, particularly around the muzzle. Triple weighting at 2,240g gives a hand feel that nothing lighter approaches, and the 112mm height carries real presence on a table. Be clear on two things before buying. It needs 60mm squares, which is a specialist board size and not what most people already own, so confirm that before you commit. And at 112mm this is well over tournament height, so it is not the set to take to a club night.

Squares of 60mm. That is larger than tournament standard and it is not optional at a 49mm base, so confirm your board before buying.
Timber only. Bud rosewood is a figured reddish brown that varies piece to piece; genuine ebony is near black with almost no figure. Dimensions and the 2,240g weight are identical.
The base carries considerably more metal than a standard weighted set. At around 66g a piece these feel planted rather than simply heavy, which matters on a piece this tall.
It is above tournament size. Standard is a 95mm to 100mm king on 50mm to 55mm squares, so for club play look at our tournament chess pieces instead.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards and storage are sold separately.
