The pattern is a Soviet one from the early 1930s, squat and close ranked: a 98mm king and a 90mm queen sharing a 40mm base, with the bishop right behind at 80mm. Only eight millimetres separate the two royal pieces, which is about as close as any set gets.
It carries the name of Antonio Fabiano Ferreira Filho, a Brazilian collector who held one of the originals, and it has been reproduced here in genuine ebony heartwood against antique boxwood.
The board is 55cm across with 55mm squares, in black dyed poplar and white erable with a matte finish. Sits among our reproduction chess pieces and at the top of our luxury chess pieces collection.
The same pattern is listed separately as pieces only. If you already own a board this set has nothing extra to offer you beyond the board itself, and the pieces alone are the cheaper route.
What the board adds is a matched playing surface at the right scale. Fifty five millimetre squares against a 40mm king base gives the position room, and the matte finish means no glare under a lamp, which matters more on a dark board than a light one.
Note that the pieces are documented by the supplier as suiting 50mm squares. The board supplied here is 55mm, which is the more generous fit rather than the tighter one, so the back rank has space. Other square sizes sit across our chess boards collection.
Most sets open twenty millimetres or more between the king and the queen, and it is the cue you use without thinking to pick out the king across a table. Here it is eight, and both pieces stand on the same 40mm base.
The effect is a centre of the back rank that reads as a matched pair rather than a monarch and a consort. Combined with an 80mm bishop right behind them, the whole royal group sits tight and high, which is the Soviet look of the period. It takes a game or two before you stop reaching for the wrong piece under time pressure.
The dark pieces are ebony heartwood, not boxwood dyed black. The colour is in the timber, so it shows a faint dark figure under direct light and will not lift off the high points after years of handling. It is also denser, which is where a good part of the 1,240g comes from.
The light pieces are antiqued rather than bright: toned to a warmer, slightly used cream. That lowers the contrast a shade against a stark white and gives the set the look of something older than it is, which is the point of a reproduction.
Black dyed poplar and white erable, 55cm square with 55mm squares and 13mm thick, finished matte. Erable is the French name for maple, and it is the traditional light timber on continental boards. At around 3kg it is substantial without being unmanageable.
Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, plus the board. No storage box is included. Weighting is added by hand and the board is handmade, so weights vary by around ten per cent. Keep both out of direct sun and wipe with a dry cloth.
This is the most expensive set in this run and the reason is straightforward: genuine ebony heartwood, not ebonised boxwood, on a pattern with real historical interest, supplied with a proper 55cm board. The proportions are the draw. A 90mm queen under a 98mm king on a shared 40mm base is unusual and gives the middle of the board a density most patterns spread out. The caveat is the same one that comes with any tight royal pair: in fast games you will reach for the wrong piece before your eye learns to read the crown rather than the height. The board is a sensible match at 55mm squares, more generous than the 50mm the pieces are documented against, and the matte finish is the right choice for a dark board. Buy it as a set to keep and play on for decades.

55cm x 55cm with 55mm squares, 13mm thick and around 3,044g, in black dyed poplar and white erable with a matte finish. Erable is the French name for maple.
Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark pieces, not boxwood dyed or stained black. The colour runs through the timber rather than sitting on the surface.
It is how the pattern is proportioned: 90mm against 98mm, both on a 40mm base. It gives the centre of the back rank more density, and you learn to read the crown rather than the height.
Antonio Fabiano Ferreira Filho, a Brazilian chess collector who owned one of the original 1930s sets. The reproduction carries his name because of that association.
No. This listing is the 34 pieces and the board only. Storage boxes are sold separately.
