The Reproduction 1935 Warsaw Capablanca Simultaneous chess pieces bring one of the more particular moments in chess history onto your own board. Jose Raul Capablanca gave his Warsaw simultaneous exhibition in 1935, and this set reproduces the chessmen used on that occasion. It is a set for players who like their history close at hand, and for collectors who want a design with a documented story behind it.
The dark pieces are turned from Ceylon ebony and the light pieces from natural boxwood, so the contrast comes from the timber itself rather than a dye or a stain. The king stands 96mm on a 41mm base, and the full complement runs to 34 chessmen. Total set weight is 1814 grams.
These sit at the upper end of our reproduction chess pieces collection, alongside the other historical patterns we stock. Pieces are sold on their own here, so the playing surface is chosen separately.
Most historical reproductions on the market are made in ebonised boxwood, where a dark stain stands in for the real timber. This set uses genuine Ceylon ebony for the dark side, which is why the grain reads differently under raking light and why the pieces carry the mass they do.
Set against a modern tournament Staunton, the differences are in proportion rather than function. The 96mm king and 41mm base follow the pattern of the period rather than current competition specification, so the pieces stand a little more upright and a little narrower at the foot.
If genuine hardwood matters more to you than this particular historical pattern, the rest of our wood chess pieces range covers the same construction standard across a wider spread of designs.
Each piece is turned and finished by hand, and the knights are where that shows most clearly. Manes and muzzles are cut individually, so no two knights across the four are identical. That variation is a mark of hand work rather than a defect.
Bases carry thick green felt. It protects the playing surface underneath and lets a piece settle into a square quietly instead of knocking down onto it.
The 34 piece roster includes two extra queens, one in ebony and one in boxwood, so a promotion does not mean turning a rook upside down. On a set bought partly for display, it also means both queens can stand alongside their kings when the pieces are not in play.
At 1814 grams for the full complement, the set averages a little over 50 grams per piece. That is enough mass for the pieces to sit steadily rather than skate when the table is knocked, without becoming tiring to move through a long game.
A 96mm king on a 41mm base wants squares between 55mm and 60mm. That gives each base room to sit without crowding its neighbours, and it is the range the maker specifies for this pattern.
Anything under 50mm will feel congested once the middle game opens up and pieces start doubling on files. Our chess boards collection lists square size on every product, so matching the two is straightforward.
The genuine Ceylon ebony is the reason to choose this set over an ebonised reproduction, and at 96mm on a 41mm base the proportions stay honest to the 1935 pattern rather than being adjusted towards modern tournament specification.
The caveat is that this is a pieces only listing. There is no board and no storage box, so both need budgeting for separately, and the 55mm to 60mm square requirement rules out a good number of smaller boards already in circulation.
It suits collectors and players who want documented history on the table. It suits anyone after a ready to play package out of a single carton rather less.

No. This is a pieces only listing, and neither a board nor a storage box is included. You will need to choose a board with 55mm to 60mm squares separately.
Collectors of historical reproductions, and players who want a set with real provenance behind it. They also work as a display set, since the two extra queens let both sides stand complete when the pieces are not in use.
Ebonised boxwood is boxwood that has been dyed black, so the grain of the lighter timber underneath still shows through. Genuine ebony, used here for the dark side, is naturally dark right through the piece. You can compare both across our chess pieces collection.
Wipe them with a dry, soft cloth and keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Turned timber responds badly to sudden swings in humidity, so a stable indoor spot is best. Do not use household cleaners or water on the surface.
The set includes two extra queens, one in ebony and one in boxwood, in addition to the standard 32 chessmen. They cover pawn promotion without borrowing a piece from elsewhere.
