A 44mm base under a 95mm king is a ratio of 46 percent, which is broad even by collector standards and very broad for a set this height. It is why 1,550g of weight sits so securely: the mass is low and the footprint is generous.
These reproduce the pieces used at the 2017 Sinquefield Cup in Saint Louis, and they come from the same carver who made the tournament set. Part of the Craftsman Staunton series, with the fine lathe work that name implies.
Genuine ebony or bud rosewood against boxwood. It sits in our reproduction chess pieces, and it should not be confused with the 2014 Sinquefield Cup reproduction we also carry, which is a different design.
We carry reproductions of both the 2014 and the 2017 Sinquefield Cup sets and they are genuinely different designs, so it is worth being precise. Both come in ebony and bud rosewood and both are around 95mm.
The 2014 set, listed as the Imperial Collector series in our reproduction chess pieces, has a taller 96mm king on a 45mm base, a shorter 69mm bishop and 63mm knight, a 51mm pawn on a wide 34mm base, and weighs 1,600g. This 2017 set has a 95mm king on 44mm, taller officers at 73mm and 67mm, a slimmer 49mm pawn on 31mm, and weighs 1,550g.
In short: the 2014 set is fractionally larger overall with a stockier front rank, and the 2017 set has more presence in its officers. Both need a similar board.
The Sinquefield Cup began in 2013 and became one of the strongest annual events in chess within a few years, run at the Saint Louis Chess Club as part of the Grand Chess Tour. By 2017 it was drawing a field of ten of the world's leading players.
Equipment for events at that level is commissioned rather than bought off a shelf, and the sets are made specifically for the tournament. This reproduction comes from the same carver who produced the 2017 pieces, which is a stronger provenance than most tournament reproductions can claim.
Weight and footprint pull in the same direction here. At around 46g a piece the set is firmly in triple weighted territory, and the 44mm king base is broad enough that the mass has somewhere to sit. The result is a set that settles rather than rocks and stays put through a hard clock press.
The ebony option is genuine ebony heartwood, dense and close grained, which holds the carved detail on the knight and contributes real mass without ballast. The bud rosewood is more figured and reads warmer against the boxwood, at the same dimensions and weight.
The 44mm king base puts this set on 55mm to 60mm squares. At 55mm the board reads properly full, which is how tournament sets are meant to look. At 60mm there is more air around each piece, which suits the set if it will be displayed as often as played.
No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size so you can match either end of the range.
The provenance is the strongest we carry on a tournament reproduction: same carver, same year, a top level event. The proportions back it up, because a 46 percent base to height ratio is genuinely broad and the 1,550g sits low and stable. The only thing to be careful about is which Sinquefield you are buying. We list both the 2014 and the 2017 and they are different designs, not two finishes of one. If you want the taller king and stockier pawns, take the 2014 Imperial Collector; if you want more presence in the officers, this is the one.

Squares of 55mm to 60mm, from the broad 44mm king base. 55mm gives a properly full tournament board, 60mm gives more space around each piece.
They are different designs. The 2014 Imperial Collector set has a 96mm king on 45mm, shorter officers at 69mm and 63mm, a 51mm pawn on a 34mm base and weighs 1,600g. This 2017 set has taller officers at 73mm and 67mm, a slimmer pawn, and weighs 1,550g. Both are in our reproduction chess pieces.
Dimensions, carving and weight are identical. Genuine ebony is near black and uniform, giving the highest contrast and holding carved detail cleanly. Bud rosewood is more figured and reads warmer against the boxwood.
They are handcrafted in India by the same carver who produced the pieces used at the 2017 Sinquefield Cup, as part of the Craftsman Staunton series.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards and storage are sold separately.
