Romanian Hungarian 97mm Chess Pieces

The Romanian Hungarian series is a pattern in its own right. It is not a Staunton, and every piece is drawn to its own profile, so the army has a character of its own once it is standing.

These chessmen are extremely popular in tournaments in Romania and Hungary. Three dark finishes are offered, and boxwood makes the light army behind all three.

The knight is the signature piece. Its mane is uniquely carved, and the body widens at the base, which makes the horse easy to take hold of and easy to play with.

At 97mm the king is a full sized piece and the army is weighted. These are sturdy chessmen, well suited to a blitz finish and steady through a classical game.

The knight does the most work. The mane is carved as its own feature and the body thickens where a hand goes, so lifting the piece and putting it down is comfortable even at speed.

Weight is the other half of it. The army comes to 1,150 grams, and that mass holds a piece where you leave it when somebody catches the table with a knee.

Only the dark side changes between the three finishes. Boxwood makes the light army on all of them, so the pale pieces stay exactly the same wherever you land.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm. The king has a moderate foot for his height, so the back rank stands easily at either end of that window, with the wider square leaving a little more air around him.

Golden rosewood, ebonised or red stained

The three options are one set of chessmen in three dark finishes. The dimensions agree, the weight agrees and the pattern agrees; what changes is the colour standing opposite the boxwood.

Golden rosewood is the warm one. It is a natural timber with grain running through it, and against the pale light army it gives the board a soft brown gold cast.

Ebonised boxwood is the hardest contrast of the three. The dark side is taken down close to black, which keeps a position legible in poor light and under a camera.

Red stained boxwood is the one to take if you want colour. The dark army carries a deep red, the two sides still separate cleanly, and the board looks like a decision somebody made.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
