Description

Sher E Punjab Series Luxury 117mm Chess Pieces

The knight stands at 87mm and the bishop at 86mm, so on this set the horse is the taller of the two. Almost no Staunton pattern does that, and it tells you where the maker's priorities lie.

The series is named for Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Lion of the Punjab, and is made in Amritsar. At 117mm the king is among the tallest we carry, on a 49mm base.

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood, double weighted to 1,750g. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Sher E Punjab Series chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 117mm king

Key features

  • 117mm (4.60 inch) king on a 49mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Knight at 87mm stands taller than the 86mm bishop, reversing the usual order
  • Available in genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood
  • Double weighted to 1,750g across the full set
  • Turned collar rings on the pieces with thick green felts
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Made in Amritsar, named for Maharaja Ranjit Singh
  • Identical dimensions and weight across both options

How the two timbers compare

Genuine ebony is a true black with almost no visible figure. On a set built around its knight, that focuses everything on the carving rather than on the timber, and it is the traditional choice at this level.

Bud rosewood is figured and reddish with swirling burl grain, so each piece carries its own pattern. It makes a warmer, less formal board and it suits a room where the set is on display rather than in play.

Dimensions, the 1,750g weight and the price are identical across both. The wider range sits in our wood chess pieces range.

A knight taller than the bishop

The conventional Staunton order runs bishop, knight, rook downward, and it is so consistent that most players identify pieces by height before they look at the head. This set breaks that at the top of the officer group.

Putting the knight a millimetre above the bishop is a deliberate signal that the knight is the piece worth looking at. On a set named for a lion and carved in Amritsar, the horse is the showpiece, and raising it above its neighbour is the maker's way of saying so. In play it costs you the height cue, so you read the head instead.

What 117mm looks like on a table

Only one set in our range stands taller. At 117mm with a 97mm queen this is a genuinely imposing board, and the 49mm base gives it the footprint to match.

The weighting is more moderate than the height suggests. At 1,750g across 34 pieces it averages around 51g, which is substantial but well short of the triple weighted sets at 2,300g. In the hand it feels solid rather than heavy, which some players prefer at this size because a very heavy piece at 117mm becomes tiring to move repeatedly.

Sizing a board for a 49mm base

Squares of 60mm. The 49mm king base is the driver rather than the height, and on 55mm the back rank fills almost completely.

Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size and worth confirming before you order. Given the height, this set also wants a table with some depth to it, since a 117mm king on a small side table looks out of proportion to the room rather than commanding it. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size.

Our expert take

The knight is the whole argument here, and raising it above the bishop is the maker telling you where to look. It is well carved and it deserves the position. At 117mm this is one of the tallest sets we stock and it has genuine presence on a table, while the more moderate 1,750g weighting keeps it from becoming tiring to play with, which very heavy sets at this height can be. Two things to settle: it needs 60mm squares, and at this height it wants a proper table rather than a side table, or the proportion goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. The 49mm king base drives that rather than the height, and on 55mm the back rank fills almost completely.

Why is the knight taller than the bishop?

A deliberate choice, at 87mm against 86mm. The knight is the showpiece of the series and raising it above its neighbour signals that. It does cost you the usual height cue for telling the two apart.

What is the difference between the two timbers?

Genuine ebony is near black with almost no figure. Bud rosewood is a figured burl with swirling reddish grain where each piece differs. Dimensions, weight and price are identical.

Is this set tournament legal?

No. At 117mm it is well above the 95mm to 100mm tournament standard. For club play see our tournament chess pieces range.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
