Spiraled Steed 84mm Chess Pieces

The Spiraled Steed is a luxury pattern drawn deliberately below the traditional three and a half inch king. It was added to fill that gap: a full carved army with a footprint that fits a table where a taller set would take over the room.

The name comes from the knight, which is cut with flowing spiralled curls running down the neck rather than a scored groove.

That is the one piece in a Staunton army that cannot be turned, so it is where the hand time goes. At this scale there is very little material to work with and no room to hide a rushed cut.

The king stands 84mm and the complete 34 pieces come to 1,000 grams. Two dark timbers are offered on the same carving.

This one is cut shorter on purpose, so the same standard of carving lands on a set that can live on a side table or a smaller board. The carving has not been reduced along with it: the detail is full size work at a smaller scale.

The second is the knight. Every other man in a Staunton army is shaped on a lathe. The horse leaves the lathe as a blank and every feature on it is cut by hand afterwards.

The third is what the timber choice changes, and honestly it is just the dark army. Ebony reads close to black; bud rosewood is a figured red brown that runs differently through every piece.

These want squares of 45mm to 50mm, and the roomier end leaves a visible ring of timber round every foot. At the tighter end the ranks stand shoulder to shoulder, and because the bishop, knight and rook share one base that stretch of the rank is tight and pieces want placing deliberately.

Everything is common to both options. The carving is the same, every height and base is the same to the millimetre, the light army is boxwood either way, the total weight does not change and the square window does not move.

Ebony is the darker of the two and reads close to black under a lamp. Against boxwood it gives the hardest separation available here, which is what you want if the set is played across a table rather than admired from a chair beside it.

Bud rosewood goes the other way. The ground is a warm red brown and the darker streaking runs differently through every piece, so no two pawns look quite alike. The contrast against boxwood is still perfectly clear in play, just less severe.
