Stallion Staunton 105mm Chess Pieces

The Stallion is a proper playing set at the larger end of normal, offered in two timbers, with the same shapes in either one.

The king stands 105mm and the army is weighted to suit, so it feels substantial in the hand without ever becoming an ornament.

The knights give the series its name. They take their inspiration from the horses of a royal wedding, and that is the character the heads carry.

The rooks are shaped as the minarets of a castle, and every piece is hand polished to a shine that sits deep in the timber.

About the pieces

Both options are the same set with a different dark timber. Height, weight, shape and square window all stay put, so what you are really choosing between is colour and tone.

The polish is worth a mention of its own. Buffing by hand leaves a smooth, deep shine that stays looking right under regular handling, which matters on a set meant to be used and not shelved.

One thing to know before you buy. The queen stands close under the king rather than well below him, so across a crowded board the two take a game or so to tell apart at a glance.

Choosing between the two timbers

The polish lands differently on the two. Ebony is a naturally dark timber that comes up close to black, so a buffed ebony piece gives you a hard, even shine and the outline of the shape, and little else up close.

Bud rosewood, which is also sold as African padauk, is red brown with figure running through it, so the same buffing leaves a surface that shifts as the piece turns and repays a close look as much as a distant one.

Play is untouched by the choice. The pattern, the dimensions, the weight and the recommended square size are identical, so pick the one you would rather look at for years.

The honest limitation is the board. This army is cut for a bigger square than a small folding board will give it, so check yours before you order and treat a new board as part of the purchase.
