Description

Stallion Weighted Staunton Sheesham 76mm Chess Set with 37cm Board

A complete set that takes up very little room. The king is 76mm, the board is 37cm across with 38mm squares, and the whole thing weighs 1.7kg. It fits on a side table, a coffee table or a desk without taking the surface over.

Small does not mean flimsy here. The pieces are weighted with an iron stud in every base and finished with thick green felt, the board is 12mm of solid timber rather than card, and the sheesham is the same golden brown Indian rosewood used on the full sized sets.

The knight is where the name comes from: a stallion head cut with more detail than a set this size usually carries. Sits in our Staunton chess pieces range.

Stallion weighted Staunton chess set in sheesham and boxwood with its 37cm board

Key features

  • 76mm (3.0 inch) king on a 30mm base, matched to the board's 38mm squares
  • 37cm board with 38mm squares, 12mm thick, and a matching timber palette
  • Sheesham dark side against boxwood, weighted with an iron stud in every base
  • 600g of pieces and a 1,100g board, 1,700g for the whole set
  • Stallion knight carving, detailed for a set at this scale
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection
  • Board included, so nothing else is needed to play

How a 76mm set compares to a full sized one

Tournament sets run 95mm to 100mm on boards of 50cm and up. This is a good deal smaller in both dimensions, and the honest way to describe it is as a second set rather than a main one: a board that can stay out permanently somewhere a full sized one could not.

What it keeps is the construction. Weighted bases, wrapped felt, solid timber board, hand polish. Sets this size are usually where those go first, replaced with hollow pieces and a card board, and this one does not do that.

What it gives up is presence and a little detail. A 57mm knight cannot carry the carving a 90mm one can, and a 38mm square does not give a position much air. If you want a set to play serious games on, look at the full sized options across our chess pieces collection.

Where a set this size earns its place

The practical case is simple. Most people who own one chess set own a full sized one, and it lives in a cupboard because the board is too big to leave anywhere. A 37cm board is small enough to leave on a side table indefinitely, which means the set actually gets used.

It also travels. At 1.7kg all in it goes in a bag without much thought, and the pieces are weighted enough not to slide around if the table is not perfectly level. It is the set for a holiday house, an office, or a coffee table where a game gets picked up over several days.

Sheesham pieces, and a matched board

Sheesham is Dalbergia sissoo, an Indian rosewood that runs from golden brown to deep reddish brown with darker streaking and an open, visible grain. It is hard and dense, which is why it takes weighting and a hand polish well. That is what the dark pieces are turned from.

The board is toned to match rather than contrast against them, so the set shares a palette: the dark pieces sit on dark squares without vanishing, and the boxwood pieces read clearly on both colours. It is a warmer look than an ebonised set on a stark black and white board. The supplier names the board timber only in its product title, not in its specification, so we quote the board's size, square size, thickness and weight rather than asserting the species.

What arrives, and what to expect

Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, and the 37cm board. No storage box or pouch is included, so the pieces are best left set up or kept in something of your own.

Weighting is added by hand and the board is handmade, so weights vary by around ten per cent between sets. Neither the pieces nor the board are waterproof or UV resistant: keep the set out of direct sun and wipe it with a dry cloth. Other boards are listed across our chess boards collection.

Our expert take

This is the set I would buy as a second set rather than a first. At 76mm on a 37cm board it will never be the one you play a serious game on, but it is properly made in a size bracket where most sets are not, and that is the whole argument. Weighted bases, wrapped felt and 12mm of solid timber at this scale is unusual, and it means the set feels right in the hand instead of feeling like a travel toy. Be realistic about two things. Thirty eight millimetre squares are tight, so a crowded middlegame is harder to read than on a full sized board. And a 57mm knight simply cannot show the carving a big one can, however well it is cut. Buy it to have a set that actually stays out and gets played on, and it is very good value at that job.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the board?

37cm x 37cm with 38mm squares, 12mm thick and around 1,100g. It is solid timber, not card, and it is matched to the 30mm king base.

Is this set tournament legal?

No. At 76mm the king sits well below the 95mm to 100mm band used for rated play, and the board is smaller than tournament sizing. It is a home, travel and casual set.

What is sheesham?

Sheesham is Dalbergia sissoo, a true Indian rosewood. It runs golden to reddish brown with darker streaking and an open grain, and it is hard enough to take weighting and hand polishing well.

Are the pieces weighted?

Yes, with an iron stud in each base under thick green felt. The 34 pieces come to around 600g, and the whole set with the board is about 1,700g.

Is a storage box or pouch included?

No. This listing is the 34 pieces and the board only.
