Sterling Chess 1849 Original Staunton chess set in crimson and ivory with a 48cm board

Key features

  • 115mm king on a 48mm base
  • Reproduction of the 1849 Staunton
  • Painted crimson boxwood
  • Painted ivory white boxwood
  • Lead weighted, about 1,750g
  • 48cm borderless board
  • 60mm squares, hi-gloss finish
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The 1849 Original Staunton chess set

The Staunton design was registered by Nathaniel Cooke in 1849 and made by Jaques of London. It was named after Howard Staunton, the leading English player of the day, who endorsed it.

Before 1849, players used many different local designs. The Staunton pattern was clear, simple and sturdy, and it soon became the standard.

This large reproduction is painted in deep crimson and ivory white, then lacquered to a high gloss. It recalls the red and white sets of the 19th century.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 48cm borderless red ash burl chess board

The board is borderless, so it's just the 64 squares: 48cm across with 60mm squares, a good fit for the 48mm king base.

It's a veneer board in red ash burl and maple with a hi-gloss finish. It's 13mm thick and weighs about 2.25kg.

With no border, it takes up less room than a 60cm board while keeping the same square size.

Prefer genuine ebony? The 1849 Original Staunton 53cm chess set has a smaller ebony version on an ebony board, or see our 1849 Original Staunton 115mm pieces.

Our expert take

"The crimson and ivory finish makes this a real showpiece, and the red ash burl board picks up the colour beautifully. Painted pieces can chip with rough handling, so it's better suited to careful play and display than to a busy club. For a collector who loves 19th century style, it's a stunning choice."
