Description

Sterling Chess 1887 Turner Teich Ebony 103mm Chess Pieces

Like Russian-style sets with a bit of mystery? These 1887 Turner Teich chess pieces reproduce a traditional Russian Staunton design, with a tall bishop and broad, sturdy bases.

The pieces are triple weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 103mm king, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

The dark pieces are genuine ebony, and you can choose antiqued or golden antiqued boxwood for the light side. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess 1887 Turner Teich chess pieces in ebony and antiqued boxwood, 103mm king

Key features

  • 103mm king on a 49mm base
  • Traditional Russian Staunton design
  • Tall bishop, close to the queen
  • Genuine ebony dark pieces
  • Antiqued or golden antiqued boxwood
  • Triple weighted, about 1,640g
  • Thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The 1887 Turner Teich chess set

This design is said to come from Russian workshops in the Tver region in the late 19th century. The name is thought to come from a turner, or lathe worker, and Teich may be a master's name or a maker's mark.

The bishop is the detail that stands out. At 86mm, it's almost as tall as the 88mm queen, and it has a distinctive mitre cut.

The bases are broad for the height, so the pieces feel steady on the board, and the overall look is solid and traditional. It suits players who like a heavy, old-world feel in their hand.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Antiqued or golden antiqued Turner Teich chess pieces?

Both options share the same design, size and genuine ebony dark pieces. The difference is the tone of the light pieces.

Antiqued boxwood has a warm, aged look. Golden antiqued boxwood is a richer, honey-gold tone, which gives a softer contrast against the ebony.

The pieces are triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,640g, so they sit firmly and feel solid in the hand.

If you like Russian and Soviet designs, compare it with our 1940 Soviet Club ebony pieces, a set of the same height.

Our expert take

"This is a handsome, heavy ebony set with a look that's a little different from the usual Staunton. The bishop is nearly as tall as the queen, which can take a game or two to get used to. For a fan of Russian-style sets, it's a great choice."
