Sterling Chess 1904 Cambridge Springs Tournament Ebonised 101mm Chess Pieces

Like a classic Staunton with a famous tournament behind it? These 1904 Cambridge Springs chess pieces reproduce the set from one of the great early tournaments in America, finished in ebonised and antiqued boxwood.

Each piece has iron studs in the base for weight, with thick green felt underneath. With a 101mm king, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

The antique finish gives the whole set a warm, aged look. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

The 1904 Cambridge Springs chess set

The Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress was held at the Hotel Rider in Pennsylvania in 1904. It was one of the first major international tournaments in America in the 20th century.

The field included world champion Emanuel Lasker, Mikhail Chigorin, Harry Pillsbury and Jackson Showalter. The young American Frank Marshall won without losing a game, finishing ahead of Lasker.

This set reproduces the classic Staunton design used at the event. Look for the king's finial, the rooks with four turret cuts, and the wide-based pawns.

The bases are broad, so the pieces feel steady on the board. The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion, and the set makes a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys chess history.

Ebonised and antiqued boxwood Cambridge Springs chess pieces

The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood, which is boxwood stained black. The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, with a warm, aged tone rather than a bright white.

Every piece has the same uniform antique finish, so the set looks like it has been played on for years. Each piece is hand polished.

The pieces are weighted with iron studs, and the full set comes to about 1,200g, so they sit firmly and feel solid in the hand.

If you like sets from early tournaments, compare it with our 1937 Stockholm Olympiad pieces, from one of the early Chess Olympiads.

Our expert take

"This is a handsome, heavy Staunton with one of the great tournament stories behind it. It's a big set that needs a board with 60mm squares, so check your board before ordering. For a player who wants a classic antique look, it's a great choice."
