The 1930 Knubbel analysis chess set

An analysis set is a small set for studying positions, away from the main board. The original Knubbel design is said to date from 1930 in Denmark, and it's said to have been a favourite analysis set of the Danish grandmaster Bent Larsen.

Knubbel is a German word for a knob or lump, which suits the chunky, rounded look of the pieces. The bases are wide for the height, so the pieces stay put while you move them around and reset the position.

There are some lovely details too. The king has no cross on top, but a small ball in the opposite colour. The queen has no ball at all, the bishops have a mitre cut, and the rooks have fine turned lines.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one varies a little, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Ebonised or stained crimson Knubbel chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size. The difference is the colour of the dark pieces.

Ebonised boxwood is stained black for a classic contrast. Stained crimson is a deep red that gives the set a warm, vintage look. Both are paired with natural boxwood and finished with a lacquer.

The pieces are slightly weighted, and the full set weighs about 700g. That's light enough to move pieces around for hours, while the felt bases keep things quiet.

Bent Larsen also won the 1973 Manila tournament, and you can find that set in our 1973 Philippines Tournament pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a charming little set that's made for studying games at a desk. It needs a board with small 45mm squares, so it won't look right on a standard tournament board. For a player who likes to analyse games, it's a great companion."
