Sterling Chess 1930s Leningrad Schoolboy 106mm Chess Pieces

These 1930s Leningrad Schoolboy chess pieces are a reproduction of a Soviet set made for learning and everyday play. The shapes are tall, plain and easy to read, with no fussy detail. It's a great choice if you'd like something different from the usual Staunton set.

It's a design that's quite different from Staunton, with tall bishops and knights and simple turned shapes. With a 106mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose sheesham or ebonised boxwood for the dark side, both with natural boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. You'll find more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

The history of the Leningrad Schoolboy chess set

In the Soviet Union, chess was taken seriously as both a sport and a way to train the mind. Leningrad, now St Petersburg, was one of the country's biggest centres for chess teaching.

The Leningrad Schoolboy set comes from that culture. It's often dated to 1937, and it was built to be practical. The shapes are plain and functional, so students could learn the pieces quickly and play without distraction.

This reproduction keeps that simple look. It's a set with a real story behind it, and it still works well for regular games today. Original sets from the period are hard to find, so a reproduction is the easiest way to own this design.

Tall bishops and knights on the Leningrad Schoolboy Soviet chess pieces

Sheesham or ebonised Leningrad Schoolboy chess pieces?

Both versions share the same design and natural boxwood light pieces. The only difference is the dark timber.

Sheesham is a warm, reddish-brown hardwood from India, with visible grain that changes from piece to piece. Ebonised boxwood is stained a deep black for a classic, high-contrast board.

Choose sheesham if you like the look of natural wood. Choose ebonised if you want the clearest contrast for play. Either way, the set has the same tall, simple shapes.

The tall bishops and knights stand out on the board in both timbers, so the set is easy to read either way. Both versions weigh about the same and come with two spare queens. If you can't decide, sheesham gives the set a warmer, more vintage feel.

Our expert take

"This is one of the most interesting historical sets in our range, and it's a great talking point. The plain shapes and tall knights look very different from Staunton, so it may not suit you if you want a traditional tournament look. For anyone who loves Soviet chess history, it's a wonderful set to own and play with."

Use a soft, dry cloth to dust them, and keep them away from direct sun, heaters and moisture.
