Description

Sterling Chess 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Ebony 101mm Chess Pieces

If you love Soviet chess history, these 1935 Botvinnik Flohr chess pieces are full of character. Chess historian Alan Dewey presented the design as a replica of the 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Soviet set, and it's packed with details you won't see on an English Staunton set.

The bishops have no mitre cut, the finials are turned in a contrasting colour, and the bases are squat and wide. With a 101mm king, this set suits a large board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

The dark pieces are genuine ebony and the light pieces are boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess 1935 Botvinnik Flohr chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 101mm king

Key features

  • 101mm king on a squat 45mm base
  • Bishops with no mitre cut
  • Contrasting coloured finials
  • Genuine ebony dark pieces
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 1,456g for the full set
  • Natural buff polish and thick green felt
  • Made for large boards with 60mm squares
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens
  • Handmade in India

What makes 1935 Botvinnik Flohr chess pieces different?

Most Western bishops have a slot cut into the head. On this set, the bishops have no mitre cut at all, so you tell them apart by their shape alone. It's one of the most recognisable Soviet details.

The finials on top of the pieces are turned in a contrasting colour, which helps them stand out on a busy board. The bases are squat and wide, so the pieces feel steady even in a fast game.

Put together, these details give the set a look that's clearly Soviet rather than English. It's a set that starts conversations at the club.

The knights are sized in proportion to the rest of the set, and every piece sits on thick felt. Because the bases are so wide, the set needs a bigger board than the king height alone would suggest. That's why we recommend 60mm squares rather than the 55mm squares many 100mm sets use.

Knight from the 1935 Botvinnik Flohr ebony chess pieces

Genuine ebony 1935 Botvinnik Flohr chess pieces

The dark pieces are genuine ebony, a dense and naturally dark timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter colour over time.

The pieces are finished with a natural buff polish rather than a heavy gloss, so the wood looks and feels natural. The light side is boxwood, which gives a clean contrast against the ebony.

Every piece is triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,456g. Thick green felt on each base keeps moves smooth and quiet.

If you'd like a Soviet set in a different size, compare it with our 1935-60 Soviet Era 113mm pieces, which share the mitreless bishops in sheesham.

Our expert take

"These are packed with Soviet details, from the plain bishops to the contrasting finials. The bishops have no mitre cut, so expect a few games before you pick them out at a glance. For a collector or club player who loves Soviet chess, it's a set with real character."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 101mm Botvinnik Flohr chess pieces?

These pieces suit a board with 60mm squares, because of their wide bases. Our Dark Brown Indian Rosewood & Maple 58cm board and Ebony & Maple Sheesham Border 58cm board both have 60mm squares, or browse the full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so each piece can show small natural differences in grain.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the 1935 Botvinnik Flohr chess pieces weighted?

Yes, they're triple weighted with thick green felt bases. The full set weighs about 1,456g.

Why do the bishops have no mitre cut?

It follows the Soviet design this set is based on. You recognise the bishop by its shape instead of a slot in the head.

What are contrasting finials?

The small tops of the pieces are turned in a contrasting colour, which makes them easier to spot on the board.

Is this genuine ebony?

Yes. The dark pieces are genuine ebony, not boxwood stained black.

How do these compare to the 1935 Botvinnik Flohr-II pieces?

Our 1935 Botvinnik Flohr-II pieces are a larger 112mm pattern in boxwood or golden rosewood. This set is a little smaller and uses genuine ebony.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
