The 1950 Dubrovnik chess set

The 9th Chess Olympiad was held in Dubrovnik, then part of Yugoslavia, in 1950. The home team won gold. A special set was made for the event, and its design is credited to the Serbian sculptor Petar Poček.

The original has smooth curves, a bishop with a rounded cap instead of a deep cut, and a knight with a look all its own. Only a small number of the original sets were made, and they were never sold in shops.

A later version of the design became closely linked with Bobby Fischer, who is said to have favoured it over any other set. That's why it's often called the Fischer Dubrovnik.

This reproduction follows the 1950 shape. The knights are carved by hand, so each one has slightly different character, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Which Dubrovnik chess piece finish should you choose?

All six options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber and finish on the dark side, and in two cases the light side too.

Ebonised and Natural pairs black pieces with pale boxwood for a crisp contrast. Ebonised and Antiqued pairs the same black pieces with boxwood given a warm, aged tone. Sheesham is a warm brown with visible grain, and stained crimson is a deep red.

Lacquered burnt boxwood is a rich, dark brown with a glossy finish. Bud rosewood is the premium option, with a deep reddish colour. It's also the heaviest set at about 1,670g, against about 1,210g for the others.

If you're a Fischer fan, compare it with our 1972 Fischer Spassky ebonised pieces, from his world title match in Reykjavik.

Our expert take

"This is one of the most famous designs in chess, and the capped bishops and knights look just right. It's a mid-size set, so on a big tournament board with 57mm squares it can look a little lost. For a Fischer fan or anyone who wants a classic with a story, it's an easy pick."
