The pieces are a slim German Staunton design with felted bases. With a 99mm king, this set suits a board with 50mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

The 1950s Bohemia German chess set

This set reproduces a Bohemian Staunton pattern from the 1950s that became popular for its dragon knights. The heads are bold and dramatic, giving the set a look that's quite different from an English Staunton.

The reproduction was made in collaboration with the collector Michael Ladzinski. A later version of the design, with a different knight, is said to have been used at the 1970 Chess Olympiad in Siegen, Germany.

The rest of the pieces are slim and elegant, in the German style. The king and queen sit on matching bases, and the officers step down neatly.

It's a set that brings a touch of central European chess history to your games. The knights are shaped by hand, so each one has its own small quirks, which only adds to the charm. With two spare queens included, the set is ready for regular play at home or at the club.

Which Bohemia German chess piece finish should you choose?

All three options share the same design and natural boxwood light pieces. The difference is the dark side.

Ebonised boxwood is stained black for a classic look. Stained crimson is a deep red that gives the set a bold, eye-catching contrast. Bud rosewood is a rich reddish timber and the premium option of the three.

The pieces are hand polished and weighted, with felted bases. The full set weighs about 900g, which makes it a light, easy-to-handle set.

If you like European tournament designs, compare it with our 1959 Russian Zagreb pieces, a classic Staunton of the same size.

Our expert take

"The dragon knights make this one of the most characterful sets in our reproduction range. It's a light set, so if you like a heavy piece that thumps onto the board, look at a triple weighted set instead. For a player or collector who loves a distinctive knight, it's a great choice."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 99mm Bohemia chess pieces?

Are the Bohemia chess pieces weighted?

Yes, they're lightly weighted with felted bases. The full set weighs about 900g.
