  • Weighted, about 1,000g

The 1959 Zagreb chess set

The Zagreb design was a popular choice at international tournaments through the 1950s and 60s. It's best known for the 1959 Candidates Tournament, played across Bled, Zagreb and Belgrade in what was then Yugoslavia.

That event was won by Mikhail Tal, who became world champion the following year. A young Bobby Fischer also played in it.

The design is a refined Staunton style with clean lines, and the burnt boxwood is finished in a high-gloss lacquer.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 55cm poplar and maple chess board

The board is 55cm across with 55mm squares, which suits the 41mm king base.

It's a veneer board with black dyed poplar dark squares and white erable (maple) light squares, in a matte finish. It's 13mm thick and weighs about 3kg.

The clean black and white squares keep the focus on the pieces.

Prefer sheesham or rosewood? The 1959 Zagreb pieces come in three timbers and are sold on their own, or browse our tournament chess sets collection.

Our expert take

"This is a clean, elegant tournament design with real history behind it. The pieces are on the lighter side, so if you like a heavy piece in your hand, look at a triple weighted set. For a club player who loves classic chess history, it's a great pick."
