Sterling Chess 1962 Stockholm Interzonal 95mm Chess Pieces

Want a set with a link to one of Bobby Fischer's greatest results? These 1962 Stockholm Interzonal chess pieces are a reproduction of the set from the tournament where a 19 year old Fischer finished two and a half points clear of the field.

The pieces are a classic Staunton design in ebonised and natural boxwood. With a 95mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a board with 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. You'll find more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

The 1962 Stockholm Interzonal chess set

Interzonal tournaments decided who would go on to the Candidates and, from there, to a world title match. The 1962 event in Stockholm is best remembered for Bobby Fischer, who won it by two and a half points while still a teenager.

This reproduction recreates the set from that tournament. It's a clean, practical Staunton design made for serious play rather than display.

The knights stand a little taller than the bishops, which keeps the back rank easy to read at a glance. The bases are wide for the height, so the pieces feel steady on the board.

With 34 pieces and two spare queens, it's ready for club nights, tournament practice or a quiet game at home.

Ebonised and natural boxwood Stockholm Interzonal chess pieces

The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood, which is boxwood stained black. The light pieces are natural boxwood, so you get the classic black and white contrast that's easy to read across the board.

The full set weighs about 1,200g, which gives the pieces a solid feel in your hand without being heavy.

If you like the Fischer connection, take a look at our 1972 Fischer Spassky ebonised pieces, a reproduction of the set from his 1972 world title match.

Because it's a plain, well-proportioned Staunton, it suits players who want a historic set they can actually use, not just put on a shelf. The pieces are sized so they don't crowd a 55mm square, which leaves room to see the position clearly during a long game. They also make a thoughtful gift for any player who admires Fischer and his road to the world title.

Our expert take

"This is a smart, no-fuss Staunton with a great Fischer story behind it. The knights are taller than the bishops, which some players love and others take a game or two to get used to. For a club player who wants a tournament set with real history, it's a great pick."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 95mm Stockholm Interzonal chess pieces?

A board with 55mm squares is a good fit. Our Player's Choice 53cm board and Deluxe Sheesham & Maple 53cm board both have 55mm squares, or browse our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

How heavy is the set?

The full set of 34 pieces weighs about 1,200g.

What was the 1962 Stockholm Interzonal?

It was a qualifying tournament for the world championship cycle. Bobby Fischer won it by two and a half points.

Is the ebonised boxwood real ebony?

No. It's boxwood stained black, which gives the classic look at a lower cost than ebony.

Why are the knights taller than the bishops?

That's how this design is proportioned. The taller knights help the back rank stand out clearly.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so the set has 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
