Description

Sterling Chess 1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cup 108mm Chess Pieces

Looking for a big, heavy Staunton with real tournament history? These 1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cup chess pieces reproduce the set from two of the strongest tournaments ever held in America. It's a tall, elegant design that makes a statement on any board.

The pieces are triple weighted, and each knight is carved from a single piece of timber. With a 108mm king, this set suits a large board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose genuine ebony or bud rosewood for the dark side, both paired with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess 1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cup chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 108mm king

Key features

  • 108mm king on a wide 48mm base
  • Queen almost as tall as the king
  • Genuine ebony or bud rosewood dark pieces
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Triple weighted, about 2,300g for the full set
  • Knights carved from a single piece of timber
  • Thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The history of the Piatigorsky Cup chess set

The Piatigorsky Cup was organised and funded by the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and his wife Jacqueline, who was a strong player herself and represented the United States at the Women's Chess Olympiad.

Only two events were held. The first was at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in 1963, and the second followed in 1966. The 1966 event was won by Boris Spassky, with Bobby Fischer in second place.

The Staunton design itself dates back to the mid-1940s and is credited to the American International Master Herman Steiner. It's known for its tall, graceful shapes and a queen that stands close to the king.

This reproduction comes with a digital certificate of authenticity. The turned pieces are shaped against metal profiles, so the pawns and officers match closely, while the knights are carved by hand and vary a little from one to the next. The wide pawn bases and neatly cut rook turrets finish off a set that looks just as good on display as it does in play.

Knight from the Piatigorsky Cup ebony chess pieces

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood Piatigorsky Cup chess pieces?

Both options share the same design, size and boxwood light pieces. The difference is the dark timber.

Genuine ebony is dense and naturally black, with a fine texture and a deep lustre. It gives the classic black and white look. Bud rosewood is a rich reddish-brown timber that gives the set a warmer, more decorative feel.

Every piece is triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 2,300g. That makes this one of the heaviest reproduction sets we carry, so the pieces feel solid and stay put on the board.

If you like Fischer-era sets, compare it with our 1966 Chess Olympiad pieces, from the same year.

Our expert take

"This is a heavy, beautifully balanced set with a great tournament story. It's a big set that needs 60mm squares, so it won't suit a standard club board. If you have the board for it, it's one of the finest reproductions you can play with."

- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
