The 1972 Fischer Spassky chess set

In 1972, Bobby Fischer played Boris Spassky for the world title in Reykjavik, Iceland. It was called the Match of the Century, and Fischer won 12.5 to 8.5 to become the 11th world champion.

The set used for the match was made by Jaques of London, the firm that introduced the first Staunton chess set in 1849. This reproduction follows that classic Staunton look.

The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood, with a warm, aged tone that gives the set a vintage look.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set.

The 53cm ebony and maple chess board

The board is 53cm across with 55mm squares, which suits the 43mm king base.

It's a solid wood board, with ebony dark squares and maple light squares. It's 22mm thick and weighs about 4kg, with green velvet underneath to protect your table.

The ebony squares give the board a deep, dark contrast that matches the ebonised pieces.

Prefer a lighter board? The 1972 Fischer Spassky 55cm chess set has the same pieces on a poplar and olive board, or see our 1972 Fischer Spassky pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a classic Staunton with the most famous match story in chess behind it, on a heavy board that stays put. The pieces are weighted but not heavy, so if you like a really solid piece in your hand, a triple weighted set will suit you better. For a Fischer fan who wants a proper wooden set, it's a great choice."
