Like the 1972 match set but want something a little different? These 1972 Fischer Spassky low knight chess pieces are an improved version of the Reykjavik set, with a short, compact knight that sits well below the bishop.
The pieces are weighted, with green felt on every base. With a 96mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a board with 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Choose bud rosewood or sheesham for the dark side, both paired with boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.
This is the second version of our 1972 Fischer Spassky reproduction. The standout detail is the knight, which stands much lower than the bishop beside it. It gives the set a compact, old-school look.
The set is based on the one used in Reykjavik in 1972, when Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky 12.5 to 8.5 to become world champion. The original was made by Jaques of London.
The rest of the pieces follow classic Staunton lines, so the set is easy to read during a game.
We carry three 1972 reproductions, and each is a slightly different turning. Compare this set with our 1972 Fischer Spassky ebonised pieces and 1972 Reykjavik Championship pieces.
Both options share the same design and boxwood light pieces. The difference is the dark timber.
Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish timber with a deep, lustrous look. It's the premium option and makes a real showpiece. Sheesham is a warm, reddish-brown hardwood from India with visible grain, and it's the more affordable choice.
Either way, the pieces are weighted and hand polished, and the full set comes to about 1,150g. Green felt pads keep moves smooth and quiet.
Pick bud rosewood if you want a set to show off, or sheesham if you want a great everyday playing set. The compact knight also makes the set feel a little different in play, as the knights sit lower in the back rank and the bishops stand out more clearly. It's a nice talking point for anyone who knows the 1972 match well.
"The low knight gives this set a charming, old-school look you don't see often. It's quite different from a modern Staunton, so it's not the one if you want tall, upright knights. For a Fischer fan who wants a set with a bit of character, it's a great pick."
