Looking for a big, heavy luxury set? These Artisan Knight chess pieces are a tall Staunton with a 114mm king and a deeply carved knight, finished with a smooth semi-gloss polish.

The pieces are double weighted, with green felt on every base. With a broad 48mm king base, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Sterling Chess Artisan Knight chess pieces in bud rosewood and natural boxwood, 114mm king

Key features

  • 114mm king on a broad 48mm base
  • Deeply carved artisan knight
  • Semi-gloss hand polish
  • Genuine ebony or bud rosewood
  • Natural boxwood light pieces
  • Double weighted, over 2,100g
  • Green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Artisan Knight chess set

The knight is the centrepiece here. It's deeply carved, with detail in the mane, muzzle and ears that gives it a lifelike look.

The rest of the set is a tall, generous Staunton. The queen stands 98mm and the bishop 89mm, so the whole set has real presence on the board.

Every base is broad, from the 48mm king to 35mm pawns, so the pieces sit steadily.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Deeply carved knight from the Artisan Knight chess pieces

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood Artisan Knight chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time. Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain.

Both sides get a smooth semi-gloss polish. The set weighs about 2,120g in ebony and 2,184g in bud rosewood, so it's a heavy set.

If you like luxury sets with a carved knight, compare it with our Arabian Knight Artisan pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a big, impressive set with a knight carved in real detail. At this size it needs a board with 60mm squares and a good amount of table space. For a player who wants a heavy luxury set that makes a statement, it's a great pick."
