Like the look of old European chess sets? These Austrian Coffee House chess pieces follow a classic Viennese style, with a tall king and queen and short, sturdy pieces in front of them. This is the V2.0 version of the design, with an antiqued light side for a well-used look.
The rooks and pawns sit low at the front of the board, and the pawns have wide bases that keep them steady. With a 98mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a board with 50mm to 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood and the light pieces are antiqued boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but not a board or box. You'll find more sets like it in our reproduction chess pieces collection.
Vienna's coffee houses were famous for chess. People would spend whole afternoons there over a game and a coffee, and these sets take their name from that tradition.
The style is easy to spot. The king and queen are tall, while the rooks and pawns stay small and solid. On this set the pawns are just 46mm tall, so the front row stays low and the bigger pieces behind them are easy to see.
The wide pawn bases are part of the same design. They help the small pawns stay upright, even if the table gets bumped during a game.
This 98mm set is the smaller of our two Austrian Coffee House sets, but it has a taller knight and shorter pawns than the 107mm version. Its antiqued light side also gives it a softer, older look.
Our 107mm Austrian Coffee House chess pieces have a bigger king and a bright natural boxwood light side, so the two colours stand out more. Choose this set if you love the antique look, or the 107mm set if you'd rather have more contrast. Both sets are handmade in India and come with two spare queens.
"This set looks like it's been sitting in a Viennese cafe for decades, and that's the appeal. The antiqued light side makes the two colours a little harder to tell apart in dim light, so it's better for relaxed games than fast blitz. If you love the coffee house style and want a warmer, vintage look, this is the one to pick."

Anything with 50mm to 60mm squares will work, and 55mm is a safe middle choice. Our Deluxe Sheesham & Maple 53cm board and Blood Red Bud Rosewood & Maple 53cm board both have 55mm squares, or see the full chess boards collection.
They're handmade in India. The pieces are carved and polished by hand, so small differences in grain and colour are normal.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards and storage boxes are sold separately.
Yes. Every piece is weighted and has a thick green felt base. The full set weighs about 1,172g.
It's boxwood that's been given a warm, aged colour instead of being left pale. It makes the set look older and softens the contrast with the dark pieces.
No. They're boxwood dyed black, known as ebonised boxwood, rather than naturally black ebony.
Four: the two standard queens plus one spare in each colour, for 34 pieces in total.
A quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth is all they need. Store them out of direct sun and away from heat or moisture.
Yes. They suit anyone who likes vintage design or chess history, and the antique finish looks great on display.
