Looking for a chess set with a dark side that isn't plain black? These Burnt Blazed lacquered chess pieces use burnt boxwood for the dark pieces, finished with a glossy lacquer coat.
The light pieces are natural boxwood, so the two sides are easy to tell apart. With a 97mm king, this is a full-size set that suits a board with 50mm to 55mm squares. The pieces are weighted and felted, so they feel solid in your hand. Each set is handmade in India.
It's the glossy, heavier version of our Burnt Blazed set, and it comes with two spare queens. Board and box are not included. You'll find it in our Staunton chess pieces collection.
Most dark chess pieces are either a naturally dark timber, like ebony or rosewood, or boxwood stained black. The Burnt Blazed set takes a different route. The dark pieces are burnt boxwood, which gives them a deep, warm colour instead of a flat black.
On this version, a lacquer coat is added over the top for a glossy finish. It gives the set a bit of shine and makes the dark pieces look richer. The lacquer also seals the surface, which makes the pieces easy to wipe clean. Because it's a natural wood finish, you can expect small differences in colour from one piece to the next.
The light pieces are natural boxwood, a pale, close-grained timber that's widely used for chess pieces. Against the glossy burnt boxwood, it gives the board clear contrast, so it's easy to see which side is which during a game.
We carry two Burnt Blazed sets, and this lacquered one isn't just the same set with a glossy coat. It's heavier, at about 1,240g against 1,050g, and the bishops, knights and rooks sit on wider bases.
Our standard Burnt Blazed chess pieces have a natural, unlacquered finish and a lighter feel in the hand. Pick this lacquered set if you like a glossy look and a bit more weight. Pick the standard set if you prefer a matte, more natural finish. Both sets share the same 97mm king and come with two spare queens.
"The glossy burnt boxwood gives this set a warmth you just don't get from an ebonised set. The lacquer means it has more shine than some players like, so if you prefer a soft, natural look, the standard Burnt Blazed set is the better pick. If you want something a little different on your board, it's a lovely set to play with."

A board with 50mm to 55mm squares works well. Our Bud Rosewood & Maple 48cm board has 50mm squares and our Ebony & Maple Sheesham Border 53cm board has 55mm squares. You can also browse the full chess boards collection.
They're handmade in India. Every piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in colour and grain are normal.
No. This set is the 34 pieces only. The board and storage box are sold separately.
Yes. The pieces are weighted and have thick green felt on the bases. The full set weighs about 1,240g.
It's boxwood that's been darkened by burning rather than stained black. It gives the dark pieces a warm, deep colour with natural variation.
It adds a glossy coat over the burnt boxwood. That gives the pieces more shine and a smooth, sealed surface.
Yes. You get a spare queen in each colour, for 34 pieces in total.
Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth to keep the gloss clean. Keep them out of direct sun and away from heaters, and avoid water or sprays.
Yes. The glossy burnt finish looks great on display, and it's a set most players won't already have.
