Description

Sterling Chess Championship Staunton 95mm Chess Pieces

Want a tournament size set that fits a standard club board? These Championship Staunton chess pieces have a 95mm king on a slim 36mm base, so they sit neatly on 50mm squares.

The pieces are weighted, with collar rings and thick green felt on every base. They suit tournament, club, school and home play. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose sheesham or ebonised boxwood for the dark side, both with natural boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our tournament chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Championship Staunton chess pieces in sheesham and boxwood, 95mm king

Key features

  • 95mm king on a slim 36mm base
  • Fits a 50mm square board
  • Classic Staunton shape
  • Collar rings on the main pieces
  • Sheesham or ebonised boxwood
  • Natural boxwood light pieces
  • Weighted, about 1,200g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Championship Staunton chess set

This is a classic tournament Staunton with a 95mm king. The king and queen share the same 36mm base, and the other pieces step down neatly from there.

Because the bases are slim for the height, the set fits the 50mm boards most clubs and schools already have.

The king, queen, bishop and pawn all have collar rings, which give the set a smart, finished look.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Sheesham or ebonised Championship Staunton chess pieces?

Both options share the same design, size and weight. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with a warm brown colour and an open, visible grain. Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces.

The light pieces are natural boxwood, and the full set comes to about 1,200g, so the pieces feel steady on the board.

If you want a carved knight with more detail, compare it with our Craftsman Knight 99mm pieces.

Our expert take

"This is a sensible club set that gives you a tournament size king on the board you probably already own. The slim bases make it look lean rather than grand, so it's not one for display. For a club, school or home player, it's a great everyday set."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 95mm Championship Staunton chess pieces?

A board with 50mm squares is the best match. Our Bud Rosewood & Maple 48cm board and Sheesham & Maple 48cm board both have 50mm squares, or see our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Championship Staunton chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're weighted with thick green felt bases. The full set weighs about 1,200g.

Is this a tournament size set?

Yes. A 95mm king is a full tournament size.

What's the difference between the two options?

Only the dark pieces. Sheesham is a warm brown wood, and ebonised boxwood is a deep black. Both cost the same.

Is this genuine ebony?

No. The black option is ebonised boxwood, which is boxwood finished to a deep black.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
