Looking for a classic Staunton set in your choice of timber? These Desert Gold Staunton chess pieces have a 100mm king, a neat carved knight and a hand polished finish.
The pieces are weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 42mm king base, this set suits a board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Choose rosewood, ebonised boxwood or sheesham for the dark side, all with natural boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our Staunton chess pieces collection.
This is a classic Staunton design with a 100mm king and an 82mm queen. The pieces step down neatly in height, which makes them easy to read at a glance.
The pawns sit on slim 28mm bases, which keeps the front rank tidy and open.
All three timber options share exactly the same sizes, so you can choose purely on looks.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
The design and size are the same across all three options. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.
Rosewood is a warm, reddish brown hardwood with a rich grain, and it's the densest of the three timbers here. Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces. Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with a warm brown colour and an open, visible grain.
Because rosewood is denser, the rosewood set comes to about 1,300g, while the ebonised and sheesham sets are about 1,050g. Every piece is hand polished.
If you'd like a more detailed carved knight at a similar size, compare it with our Craftsman Knight 99mm pieces.
"This is a tidy, classic Staunton that looks good in any of the three timbers. It's a moderate weight, so if you want a really heavy set, look at a triple weighted design. For a home or club player who wants a dependable everyday set, it's a great choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
A board with 50mm to 55mm squares works well. Our Bud Rosewood & Maple 48cm board and Sheesham & Maple 48cm board both have 50mm squares, or see our full chess boards collection.
They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.
No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.
Yes. They're weighted with thick green felt bases. The full set weighs about 1,300g in rosewood, or about 1,050g in ebonised boxwood or sheesham.
Rosewood is a rich reddish brown and the heaviest option. Ebonised boxwood is a deep black, and sheesham is a warm brown.
Rosewood is a denser, more premium timber, so it costs more and makes a heavier set.
No. The black option is ebonised boxwood, which is boxwood finished to a deep black.
Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.
Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
