Like the look of a classic mid-century French set? These French Lardy chess pieces reproduce the design made famous by the Lardy company of France, with its blocky, easy to spot knight.
The pieces are double weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 95mm king, this set suits a board with 50mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
Choose ebonised boxwood, sheesham or Indian rosewood for the dark side, all with natural boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.
Lardy was a French chess maker based in the Jura region. In the 1950s and 1960s its sets were exported in large numbers to the USA and England, where they were sold under a number of retailers' names.
The design is easy to recognise. The knight has a blocky, squared-off head, and the other pieces have clean, simple lines.
A Lardy set is also said to appear in the 1963 James Bond film From Russia with Love.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
All three options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.
Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished black, for a classic black and white look. Sheesham is a warm brown timber with visible grain, and Indian rosewood is a deeper, darker brown.
The pieces are double weighted and buff polished by hand. The ebonised and sheesham sets weigh about 1,200g, and the Indian rosewood set about 1,250g.
If you'd like a smaller Lardy set, see our French Lardy Compact 76mm pieces.
"The chunky Lardy knight gives this set real character, and it's a lovely size for a standard board. It's on the lighter side, so it won't feel as heavy as a triple weighted Staunton. For a player who loves vintage French style, it's a great pick."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
A board with 50mm squares is the best match. Our Bud Rosewood & Maple 48cm board and Sheesham & Maple 48cm board both have 50mm squares, or see our full chess boards collection.
They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.
No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.
Yes. They're double weighted with thick green felt bases. The full set weighs about 1,200g, or about 1,250g in Indian rosewood.
