Description

Sterling Chess Grandmaster Staunton 95mm Chess Pieces

Want a dependable tournament set for club and home play? These Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces have a 95mm king, a classic Staunton shape and a hand polished finish.

The pieces are weighted, with thick green felt on every base. With a 41mm king base, this set suits a board with 50mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Choose ebonised boxwood or sheesham for the dark side, both with natural boxwood. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more in our Staunton chess pieces collection.

Sterling Chess Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces in ebonised and natural boxwood, 95mm king

Key features

  • 95mm king on a 41mm base
  • Tournament size Staunton
  • King and queen on matching bases
  • Neat carved knight
  • Ebonised boxwood or sheesham
  • Natural boxwood light pieces
  • Weighted, about 1,120g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Grandmaster Staunton chess set

This is a classic tournament Staunton made for club play, school play and fast games at home.

The king and queen share a 41mm base, and the bishop, knight and rook all share a 32mm base. That gives the back rank a neat, even feel under your hand.

The pieces step down clearly in height, from the 95mm king to the 46mm pawn.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Ebonised or sheesham Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Ebonised boxwood is boxwood finished to a deep black, giving a crisp contrast against the pale light pieces. Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with a warm brown colour and an open, visible grain.

The pieces are weighted, and the full set comes to about 1,120g. They're hand polished for a lasting shine.

If you'd like a tournament set in bud rosewood, compare it with our GM Blitz Staunton 95mm pieces.

Sheesham and boxwood Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces

Our expert take

"This is a tidy, no fuss tournament set that does everything a club player needs. It's a moderate weight, so it's not as heavy as a triple weighted set. For a club, school or home player who wants a proper Staunton, it's a great everyday choice."

Frequently asked questions

What size chess board do I need for 95mm Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces?

A board with 50mm to 55mm squares works well. Our Bud Rosewood & Maple 48cm board and Sheesham & Maple 48cm board both have 50mm squares, or see our full chess boards collection.

Where are these chess pieces made?

They're handmade in India, so expect small natural differences in grain from piece to piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. You get the 34 pieces only. The board and box are sold separately.

Are the Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces weighted?

Yes. They're weighted with thick green felt bases. The full set weighs about 1,120g.

Is this a tournament size set?

Yes. A 95mm king is a full tournament size.

What's the difference between the two options?

Only the dark pieces. Ebonised boxwood is a deep black, and sheesham is a warm brown wood. Both cost the same.

Is this genuine ebony?

No. The black option is ebonised boxwood, which is boxwood finished to a deep black.

Do I get spare queens?

Yes, one in each colour, so you get 34 pieces.

How do I look after these chess pieces?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat and water, as the pieces aren't waterproof.
