Sterling Chess Meghdoot Staunton 80mm Chess Pieces

Looking for a compact Staunton in a quality timber? These Meghdoot Staunton chess pieces have an 80mm king and come in bud rosewood or genuine ebony.

Every piece has an iron stud in the base and green felt underneath, with a hand polished finish. This set suits a board with 45mm to 55mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.

Sterling Chess Meghdoot Staunton chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood, 80mm king

Key features

  • 80mm king on a 32mm base
  • Compact classic Staunton
  • Bishop and knight the same height
  • Suits 45mm to 55mm squares
  • Bud rosewood or genuine ebony
  • Boxwood light pieces
  • Weighted, about 870g
  • 34 pieces, including two spare queens

The Meghdoot Staunton chess set

This is a classic Staunton in a compact size, with an 80mm king and a 70mm queen sharing a 32mm base.

The bishop and knight both stand 62mm, and the pawn comes in at 49mm, so the set keeps neat, even proportions.

It's a great size for a smaller table, a study or a board you want to leave set up.

The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.

Knight from the Meghdoot Staunton chess pieces

Bud rosewood or genuine ebony Meghdoot chess pieces?

Both options share the same design and size, and both cost the same. The difference is the timber of the dark pieces.

Bud rosewood is a rich, reddish brown timber with lively grain, so no two pieces look quite the same. Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.

Each piece has an iron stud in its base, and the full set comes to about 870g. The pieces are buff polished in several coats for a lasting shine.

If you'd like a compact set with a more playful knight, compare it with our Laughing Knight 78mm pieces.

Genuine ebony and boxwood Meghdoot Staunton chess pieces

Our expert take

"It's rare to get genuine ebony or bud rosewood in a set this compact, and that's what makes it special. It's small, so it won't suit a full size tournament board. For a smaller space or a player who wants quality timber in a compact set, it's a great choice."
