Want a heavy, collector-grade Staunton named after the man who registered the design? These Nathaniel Cooke 1849 Staunton chess pieces are big, broad and triple weighted, in genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood.
Every piece has thick green felt on its base. With a 115mm king, this set suits a board with 60mm squares. Each set is handmade in India.
The antiqued boxwood has a warm, aged tone and a semi-gloss finish. Two spare queens are included, but no board or box. See more historical sets in our reproduction chess pieces collection.
The Staunton design was registered by Nathaniel Cooke in 1849 and made by Jaques of London. It was named after Howard Staunton, the leading English player of the day, who endorsed it.
Cooke's design brought together simple, clear shapes that any player could read at a glance. It soon became the standard pattern for chess around the world.
This collector version is built big. The bases are broad, with a 52mm king base and a tall 97mm queen, so the set has a strong, commanding look on the board. It's a set that looks just as good in a study display cabinet as it does in play.
The knights are carved by hand, so each one has its own small differences, while the turned pieces match closely across the set. Two spare queens are included, so you're always ready for pawn promotion.
Genuine ebony is a dense, naturally black timber. Because the colour runs right through the wood, it won't wear through to a lighter shade over time.
The light pieces are antiqued boxwood, which has a warm, aged tone rather than a bright white. Both sides have a semi-gloss finish.
The pieces are triple weighted, and the full set comes to about 2,220g. That's one of the heaviest sets in our reproduction range, so every move feels solid.
If you'd like the classic 1849 pattern with slimmer bases, compare it with our 1849 Original Staunton 115mm pieces.
"This is a big, heavy collector's Staunton with real presence on the board. The broad bases need a board with 60mm squares, so it's too large for most home boards. For a player who wants a weighty ebony set to keep for life, it's an excellent choice."
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
